Thursday night , finally…a night off…and they were calling for rain on Friday , but I prayed that it would hold off until at least late afternoon so I could go crabbing with daddy. We needed the rain…but even more i needed a "me "day…a time to unwind , soothe my nerves … a time to go home and bring peace to my world again.
There was a heavy stillness in the air when I left the house…a warning of the rain that was sure to come later in the day…but I kept my hopes high that we would be able to work through the morning.
0400 I was pulling away from Hardee’s with the traditional breakfast biscuits for mom and dad…and a couple for Charles too who I hoped we would see in the creek running his pots. Quick hello to mom who swore the low rumble of our voices in the kitchen didnt wake her:smiley:…and we were off to the ramp.
The sun was just starting to rise and stain the sky with color as we left the ramp…and I took a deep deep breath to suck in as much of the smells of the creek as I could. …and immediately felt a calmness settle over me and couldn’t stop a big grin from creeping across my face and I looked back to see daddy grinning at me too as if he could read my mind and knew what this time meant to me.
Penny glad you got a day on the water, there is something about it that soothes the soul.I remeber years ago an old fella told me Red sky at night sailors delight Red sky in the morning sailors take warning: ask yor Daddy if he believes??

Great post, as usual. I had the same feeling about the tower coming down. I have been fishing McCellanville for a number of years. It won’t be the same with the tower gone. By the way, can someone provide a little history of the tower. I have heard that it may date back to WWII where it was used to watch for German U-boats, etc. Considering where it was located that story seems a little unlikely. Anyone know the real story?
I wondered if …as the winds blew and the rain poured down that night…and as the tower stood in its final moments then gave way to the sea and the skies torment…if it fell with a mighty wrenching groan …or if it just slowly sank to the cushion of the marsh and mudds Embrace , in a tired heap. I wondered if the birds rose from the marsh with the noise of it…and if the rain was the sky crying just as I was As I looked upon it lying there. Some may laugh at me crying over a rusty old tower…but it was something that had always been there…it wasn’t supposed to go away…and it was a reminder of how we lose the things we love as time passes.
Penny that’s pure poetry.
