I find this to be a great bait when they just will not hit anything else.I set my trap out the day before and usually have a nice mess the day of fishing.I put them in a bucket and drop in a wet towel to cover them.
When needed I pull off the claws and shell.Half the crab and put a circle hook between the back flipper joint and work it back out.In Florida they walk the beach with a metal scoop and pick up small crabs for tarpon.Small Croaker is my choice of bait for trout, next Pin fish. However both are a pain to find and catch.Finger mullet is the best available choice and works great.Pin fish for reef fishing is my best choice.I have two pin fish traps that i just never use.I baited one in Fla and the next day had 50 in it.At $.25 each that is a great deal.
We caught one of those mud crabs yesterday but never had the opportunity to try him out as bait. I believe I have read here that they work pretty good.
I am gonna try them soon.

There is a guy that my nephew uses that has them behind his house.Just drop money in a bucket and help yourself.Remember that was 5 years ago i went to ft myers.I have a spot that will give you all the pin fish you want,Just a long ride from my house.Close up place but larger pin fish is the marina at marker 29.Ross marine.Next to the pilings.Plenty of 4-6 inch pinfish.
