While surf fishing, a Georgia resident, Cracker Larry, caught a fine example of a fish that NOAA had previously reported as being extinct. When interviewed about his catch, Larry says he used to catch many of them years ago, but had not seen one in a long time! He also says they aren’t very good eating except when you smoke them! DFreedom, needs to look into this catch by Larry, as he may have violated some law! Photo provided below, is Cracker Larry posing with his Square Grouper catch!

I lived on Big Pine Key back in the 70’s. Those things were a common catch in those days. Think government “regulation” had something to do with their demise.

Actually it was later found that there is no demise of the square grouper , it was found that it is now taking a different migratory path. Government is pleased to say it is on a good recovery path.
Easy, your a mess!

The invent of aerial surveillance balloons and satellites put a serious dent in the local square grouper population. Made them almost extinct.
Yall ever seen that blimp hanging over Cudjoe Key? I know some of you have. Her nickname is Fat Albert. It can see you picking your nose from 300 miles away. The days of loading a shrimp boat deck with bales are long long over with.

In 1973 a load of illegal Square Grouper was unloaded onto a pier on Key Largo! The poachers were discovered by the Game Wardens and chased off into the marsh! The Game Wardens loaded the Grouper into trucks and hauled it off and waited for the snakes and mosquitoes to drive the poachers back to the road! There was only one way onto the Key and one way off! Just down the road from the pier was a US Army Nike Hercules missile site. Some of the soldiers must have seen the bust from the guard towers. The next morning a couple of the soldiers were out with brooms, ,sweeping the pier clean of Grouper Scales, that had fallen off during the unloading and loading! The Wardens said the were destroying evidence! The soldiers said they were just tidying up! They said they fished on that dock and wanted to keep it clean![:0]

Thats it Larry, I’ve heard enough, I’m calling Sean Penn:smiley:
The Keys were a wild place back in the day! Once you got on one, there was only one road! You either went North or South. Unless you swiped a boat all they had to do was wait at a bridge! That was before cell phones, so if you needed a ride you couldn’t call your buddy for one! There was nothing on the Keys except right near the road!
