Cracker Larry Help Please!

Larry,
I’m trying to use your method of drilling an oversize hole, filling with epoxy, then drilling for screw mounting.

Problem I’m having is that its on the side wall of the whaler and I’m having a hell of a time getting the hole to fill without an air bubble waiting for the epoxy to cure. I’ve been putting some packing tape outside it to try to keep it in place. It’s a disaster. I suck.

Any pro-tips for me?

Thanks pal

Can you post a picture of the holes you are trying to fill? How big is it? What size are the screws?

As a general rule when filling holes in the sides, I mix a fairly thick batch of epoxy and wood flour. About like peanut butter. I cover the down hill side of the hole with duct tape. Make a very small slit in the tape at the top of the hole, to let air escape. Then pack in the thickened epoxy from the other side until it runs out your weep hole. This will get out the air bubbles. Once it’s full, slap a piece of tape on the other side until it cures.

Will post a pic later today. I drilled a half inch hole. It’s got foam behind it so I hollowed it out for room for screw and epoxy. I must not have it near thick enough. Thanks!

Peanut butter thickness is what you want.

Not to derail, but what about purchasing a fiberglass dowel and using it as a plug – just coating it with thickened resin and shoving it in? I ask because I’m planning on filling some old transducer holes this winter.

^^^Yes has to be thickened. Also put the epoxy mix in the small bag (Ziploc or similar). Cut a small opening in one of the corners and use it like a pastry bag. Shove the tip in the hole and fill from the inside out.

Give me a shout, I have plenty of thickener. You can also grab some wood:wink:

Or you can use an epoxy syringe. Cut the tip off whatever size stream of epoxy you want to shoot.

I usually use a large syringe too, get them cheap at farm supply stores. For larger holes I just use a putty knife and force it in.

When you get older, you can use a popsicle stick:imp:

West 610 comes in a calk tube. It mixes in the tip. Easy to use. $26 at west marine

Just to bring this to a closure… I just mixed some epoxy up and found a tube of West thickener I had from a prior project. Mixed it up to peanut butter thickness and filled it in with a piece of thin cardboard. Easy peasy. I feel like more of moron than usual. THANKS all for your help. Why? If you don’t know something, ask. Nobody knows everything, but everybody knows something. Moron’s are the ones who don’t ask the questions. Fools rush in where wise men fear to tread.
