Crappie Minnows

Are crappie minnows shipped in from somewhere; or, are they caught locally? If caught locally, what kind of fish are they? Can they be caught in a saltwater minnow trap?

Thanks

I believe most of the Crappie Minnows are golden shiners. Some may be fathead minnows. The vast majority of crappie size minnows are produced out of state and distributed to the local bait shops in smaller loads. Golden shiners are local and yes you can catch some in those little minnow traps, but you may also catch some golden top minnows and other small minnow size fish. Golden shiners are easy to produce and distribute hence more common than anything else, but I don’t know if they actually catch crappie better. Sometimes you see rosy reds for sale and they are just a color variety of fathead minnows. I always thought the size was more important than the species, but I’ve been wrong more than once. Little thread fin shad should catch crappie if you could keep them alive…any way there is more info than you asked for…my Cliff Clavern moment. First pic golden shiner Second pic Rosy red (fathead minnow)

Thank you for taking the time to answer me. I appreciate the writeup.

I have caught some VERY nice crappie size golden shiners (several inches long, fat as a large pinky finger) at Lake Moultrie, near the weedlines, in morning and afternoon times. Look for them schooling and making ripples near the surface. In calm water, it suddenly starts looking “nervous” around the ends of the weeds. Drop a cast net on them.

Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.

I would add that I know a guy who is very successful using mosquito fish to catch crappie…light line and small hook.
