Do you orefer a hat rig versus a chest rig for a camera? Is the hat rig heavy? I’ve been considering a portable camera for my river fishing trips but don’t really know anyone that uses them that I can prod for first hand knowledge.
Good stuff there, Caperman. We were in the South Edisto Saturday fishing for sharks and the sturgeons were jumping everywhere. The closet was about 20’ off of our bow. In 2013, we had one almost do what yours did, but it went across the bow. My granddaughter had just moved to a get under the Bimini top and not more than a minute later, the sturgeon sailed across in front of three of us. NO camera, but three eyewitnesses saw it all. This Saturday these were seven us watching these things launching out the water all around us. We were down where the South Edisto turns left at markers 153 and 157, I think. It is not far from ■■■■■■■ Cut. Not sure why they do this as I believe they are bottom feeders. The water depth there ranges from 48’ to 33’ in the holes at high tide to 15’ toward the banks. Needless to say, my three oldest grands think me and Nana are the best grandparents ever due to this amazing adventure. Catching and releasing four sharks and a Cownose Ray didn’t hurt, either.

Thanks for all the good coments . It’s my pleasure to share it. I’ve never seen tarpon jump but I’ve seen them roll and these were rolling just like them . We thought that’s what they were this time. After watching some of the other videos we had of them jumping they have a distinct jump. Straight up then a twist they land on their side. I heard one jumps in the boat at least once a year on the waccamaw river. This beast could have easily destroyed my boat. I’ve seen what a 70 lb cobia can do to a boat even after a big fight. This one was fresh and probably would have beat himself to death. I always wear a gopro on a hat cam I made. Especially when I am fishing. How many times have you seen something and nobody else does or you wish you had the camera rolling.

I was told by a fish biologist friend that they do it to remove parasites. Don’t know if that’s the real reason, but that’s what he says. I figured they just like to jump.

I’m pretty I saw you guys down there. I spotted them while I was back there looking for shrimp. Decided to bring the kids back for the show. I knew they would be active at the high tide right at dark. I was right. If I remember right you guys were fishing not too far away from the house that’s on the island. You can hear the generator running. I was out there watching In a white hewes flats boat. Weren’t there 5 or 6 of you in the boat ? That was a good day. @archerhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMp0xkXwdCo&sns=em here’s how I made mine. Make sure not to put it too far out on the bill and it won’t be too heavy. Put it as close to your head as possible without the hardware touching your head. And be sure to use the skeleton case for the gopro it’s lighter but not waterproof. It’s kinda like a new pair of sunglasses it is a little irritating but it sees what you see . Chest mount is ok but you need 2 more extensions to be able to view up and down. So it’s now sticking out too much IMO. I was diving with chest mount yesterday and it barely saw anything and kept getting in the way. Hope this helped.
Yep, there was 5 us in our Carolina Skiff and our daughter and her husband was tied up to us in their (was ours) Scout; a total of seven people. We always launch from the Dawhoo as we on Yonges Island. We have been fishing the rocks along Pine Landing and have had the sturgeons jump there too. Your encounter is awesome and catching it on video is amazing. Glad your daughter is fine and she has a great attitude about the whole thing. It is good thing they don’t have teeth and I believe a green one could mess up a boat real bad. A security guard at work told me the Edisto River up near Gihvans is “eat up with sturgeons”. He lives on the water, so he should know.

I’m sure some of you have seen the River Monsters episode on sturgeon and how they were believed to be responsible for knocking people out of their boats. He should have seen this video. Pretty awesome. I bet your daughter was freaked.
