Creek fishing

I’m starting to explore some new creeks and I need some advice on how to fish them. I spent the half incoming to half outgoing exploring a single creek today with no luck. I was using MM under a popping cork fishing grass edges and eddies. I tried a few small ditch mouths on both the edges and in the center. This creek had no visible oysters on the banks and no “drop-offs” at the grass edge. There was bait everywhere. Can anyone give me some pointers for finding fish in creeks like this?

Well at worst you found yourself a good bait creek. But I would throw the cast net and catch some of the bait out the creek and try fishing with whats in the water because more than likely that’s what all the fish in there are feeding on. Then I would also try several different rigs to cover different spectrum’s of the water and depending on the clarity of the water would might switch to cut bait for better chances.

I’d scout it at low tide if you’re able. That’s a good starting point. Try both sides of the mouths and breaks in current even if they’re subtle. I hate popping corks, but you’d think they’d work along the grass. Try different methods as one way will work when another won’t in the same exact area.

Are you anchoring or using a trolling motor? I made me a stick it pole and have found some hard bottoms with rocks and oysters in places and depths I wouldn’t have expected.

The best thing to do is use the search function on here and just get out there. What area are you fishing in? How big of a creek?

Once the water gets in the grass I start to struggle for now, but I’m working on changing that.

Actually the clarity was very bad, so the cut bait might have been a good choice. Water clarity has been horrible up here lately both in north inlet and santee
