Nothing new on this forum … either no one’s fishing or no one’s telling … I know it’s cold and windy and cold/windy … but someone must have something to say about something???

Here, I’ll start … my m@#$%^#$%%R$#%#$#%#@%^^$%ing boat is still broke!!:angry::angry::angry:

Next member, please … :smiley::smiley:

it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish now!!!

2005 Sea Pro 2100cc / Yamaha 150hp 4-Stroke

I went out in that wind Saturday night. I went up in the big saluda. I marked fish/bait all through the channel on my way up to a spot. Got to my spot and fished all the way through the hole and didn’t mark many until the upper end of the hole. Got two 18"ish shorts and then it got dark. Fish completely disappeared as soon as it got dark. Went back to the channel where I saw them before and they were all gone. Went all the way down and back up the little saluda to just above the first bridge. Marked a few fish under the bridge but no takers.

I’m the only person I know that night fishes in the winter and I cant figure out where they go. I may beach my boat on a point and fish shallow next time. I’m going to try some morning fishing Saturday, not sure where though.

Multiple “keeper” fish on flies the past week. Basically fishing GPS pts from last year about 2 weeks later than normal(guess drawdown may be a factor). I am hitting shallow fish and they are feeding on shad(spawn?). Still not lights out, but fun if you don’t mind some trash green fish mixed in:smiley:

I haven’t been since last time I posted a report…might be able to get out a few hours this weekend if I don’t go offshore on a friends boat…and then next weekend will be getting the boat and gear ready for all of Thanksgiving weekend in Charleston.

RK–Are you using Clouser minnows? What color? There’s just something special about a fish on the fly!

Clouser variations as well as a bucktail Somethin’ Else. Chart/white or Grey/white. Size 1, mostly.

Got “suprised” with a few over 10# last winter on flies.

Thanks and good luck.

You guys really got me curious about trying some fly fishing for stripers. I’ve been talking about it for years, but never really got around to it and I’m ready to give it a try. I’m thinking my boat would be ideal for it with the big platform in the front.

I know Saluda Shoals Park occassionally has classes on learning to cast a fly rod. What weight rod would be good to buy for stripers on the lake? …any pointers to what to look for in a reel?

I don’t want to spend a fortune, but I also don’t want to get a cheapo I would want to replace once I figure out what i am doing.

Thanks,

Temple Fork Rods (Price Dependent in your range)
Okuma SLV 8/9 Reel
150 yds 20# backing
Bass/Redfish Taper Line(Rio)-easier to cast
My favorite is Wulff Monoclear Intermediate flouro leader) 80% of time
12-15# leaders
Subsurface flies for more bites, but poppers are a hoot

8 Weight rod will double on the lake and in the salt(if you decide to)

Maybe meet up and show you some of the goods sometime…

Thanks!

Had to stop by work this am for a few, so I made a pit stop at Sportsman’s. Checked out an SLV, but they only have the 7/8 ($59). Found the 8/9 on Amazon for $45 with free shipping. I’m going to order it.
