Cruise to Grand Cayman

Hey everyone. My wife and I are taking our second cruise in as many years, and this time we are headed to Grand Cayman as one of our stops.

I’m wondering if any one of you have been there before and can point us towards some stuff to go do. I understand that the flats with the stingrays are a popular attraction and something called “hell” because of the dark rock formations.

To answer your question, no I don’t have time to fish. After my try at fishing in Cozumel on the last cruise, I don’t think my wife will be up for that again for a while. LOL!!

I just got back from a cruise to the Caymans and Cozumel. Grand Cayman is EXPENSIVE. we had 4 mixed drinks and a plate of nachos = $100. OUCH.
our excursion was cancelled do to water clarity. I heard the stingrays are really cool. I know several people who say that “hell” is a waste of time. Nothing there but jagged rocks.

Cozumel we did a dolphin swim. very cool.

Thanks Fishb8. That is good stuff to know. We did some reading and found that there is amazing snorkeling just near the pier there in Grand Cayman. So we think we will just walk down there and swim for a bit, then go get some food. We were also shocked how expensive the prices are. We looked online at some restaurants and it was shocking. But, we think we’ll just bring some extra cash, have a quick bite, then eat dinner on the boat.

Enjoy. The water is awesome. That place is for the rich. Every other store is a high priced jewelry or watch place.

Try the Rays, Reef and Rum Point excursion offered by one of the local operators. Swimming with the rays is a blast. Then you have a little snorkeling on the reef. Lunch is at Rum Point where afterwards you can do some more snorkling or just chill on the beach.

I don’t know if you have gone yet or not, but Stingray Alley is a hoot. Book the trip yourself on-line with a local charter to save some serious jack. Bargains abound on EVERY island in the Caribbean, you just have to do some research. Get away from Seven Mile Beach and things are a lot more reasonable. Let us know how it went.

Did The Caymans a few years ago. If you walk the main dock to the front road and take a left, there is a dive shop on the left a couple of blocks away. Skip the cruise excursion and go to the dive shop. You’ll walk right out the back door into the fish and right towards the wreck they have for the cruise ships and have an extra two hrs of water time. If you can get some cereal (the little breakfast boxes) you can have all the fish all over you in seconds. There was also an anchored boat just on the right going out that had 50+ tarpon under it. Got tons of underwater pics next to the tarpon and a few videos swimming right behind three of them.

Guy Harvey is frequent in his shop down there, and the gallery down there has some real nice originals worth looking at.

There’s also a huge hole in the coral somewhere (1000’+) that I heard is umbelievable. I’m sure you can find it through the web.

Enjoy the trip! I liked the Caymans.
