I went to test my boat so no rod. I went toward the light house and no bait along the bank but a few boats scatters fishing. Cruised over to crosbys and no buddy fishing this side and no bait on the bank. I then cruised over to the inlet and there was no one fishing but bait on the folly bank side. I don’t know if the sand bar by the marina got bigger or the tidewas down that much but it seems bigger than it use to be. If you go from the landing to bowens and crosbys one of the sail boats sank and is unmarked and semi submerged and submerged on the higher tides so heads up. I was cruising all over that thing last time i was out and didn’t even know it was there because it was submerged
Yea I saw that Sunday along with another sunken sailboat in the crosbys creek. There should be some kind of law in place that if your boat creates a navigational hazard, you should have to clearly mark it and remove it or face very heavy fines. Also, there is a green marker missing in the channel going from folly marina to the inlet… learned it the hard way but luckily it was a rising tide

Thanks for the heads up on that! We usually go through
there a few times when we’re fishing Folly! We went in and out of Cutoff reach Thanksgiving weekend to Bowens and Kings flats so we got lucky and missed it this time.

Agreed, that green is an important marker. Almost got me.
Sucks to try and look ahead while looking down at your depth readout because it just doesn’t feel right.
“No… it’s okay, I know the way out…”

There are regulations. It is the owner’s responsibility to mark the and remove the vessel. Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to track down the owner of a submerged boat. And when we do, most of the time they claim to have sold the vessel. Not a whole lot we can do if the new owner didn’t register it, unless the old owner has their contact information. It’s extremely frustrating, both as a recreational boater and someone who works in the field of search and rescue.

That seems so easy, I sold it. If there were better regulations on this type of stuffs there wouldn’t be a problem. Any boat anchored for a long period should be forced to register or have consequences. I see dnr and police boats all the time. Its as simple as taking a picture or writing down the number, if there is no owner to contact than there should be a ticket placed and a time period like salvaging a boat before it is removed. It would be a lot easier to deal with them before they sink. I bet someone could salvage at least 1 of those sail boats for being abandoned. For a while there was a black sail boat with no markings and on a dark night you couldn’t see it. There is 5 sunken sail boats in a mile of the landing 3 are major hazards. That’s a lot of hazzards not removed. Seems a bit negligent to me, I mean you never see this type of stuff on land. Imagine if they were wrecked or abandoned cars on the road. Its not like these are in weird spots they are right by the main running ways. They should at least get marked that shouldn’t be to hard to do or expensive.
I’m fuzzy on the details and don’t know how it has progressed, but I do know our Representative Peter McCoy posed a measure to address the abandoned/hazard boat issue throughout our area. It is a major undertaking requiring a great deal of capital. I’m sure it could use your voice of support
I get real tired of all the sail boats, it takes a special breed of douche-bagery entitlement to leave a boat in the water unattended. Some of these people are so $ loaded they don’t even care whats going on with their sail boat.
It would be great if they could remove them but I don’t think it’s too much to ask for them to simply mark them as a navigational hazard.

A lot (not all) of people that live on boats on a mooring don’t have much to their name…transient type. You’ll notice most of the time the ones that break loose and sink look like they were in pretty bad shape prior to sinking. It’s cheap living, can’t make them pay for if they don’t have the means. See it a lot on the West coast, boats wash up fairly often. The only difference is, they are removed promptly. I’ve been told out here the city doesn’t want to pay for it and old maritime salvage laws say something along the lines of “first person to touch it takes ownership of it” and it’s pricey to remove submerged vessels.
On a side note, who would I contact if I wanted to report the green marker missing?? I assume the coast guard but if I called would they really care enough to do anything?

What Erdman said.
There is a tool for reporting abandoned vessels in SC that can be found at https://mycoast.org/sc.
The webpage has a link to a free app that makes reporting easy.
