Last week it was in the mid 50’s in Yellow House Creek. It got above 60 in the really shallow feeder creeks, but that was on a very sunny, warm day.

What’s the optimum temperature, and what’s too cold to even try?

I can tell you that Wednesday was too cold for me to try, but I did it anyway and drove 75 miles one way to get skunked!

Winter of 2011 the water temp was 39.4 degrees in Hamlin Sound. Trout were floating in the Intercoastal, and Reds had as much fight as a wet dish rag. It wasn’t worth it.

Well, that’s not exactly what I meant, but it will definitely pick up for the majority of anglers toward the end of April. I should have said the inshore patterns won’t change until then. More people tend to start having success about that time because the fish start “moving” more and are prevalent in a wider range of places. Also, metabolisms and presence of food increases, so obviously feeding activity increases. Right now, reds and trout are locked up tight in large schools or very specific areas. When you are NOT around them, the chances of some wandering by in formerly productive spots are fairly slim. Compound this with the fact that the fish are surviving on very little food this time of year and they are being pursued heavily by flipper on a daily basis, and you at times have the recipe for some very frustrating fishing if catching is your only focus.
