Have a set of cushions that need replacing. They are the ones that are near your knees that you lean against, no idea the name… They are about 5 ft x 6 inches x 3 inches.
Called Bendt and they want 225 each to replace. Anyone have any ideas to get in cheaper than that?
Anyone ever try just bringing them to a tailor and ordering the vinyl online somewhere? Dont kill me for that question.
They are called BOLSTERS and are meerly a 1/4 piece of plywood cut to your specs and foam glued on to one side and covered with a viynal covering they are usually mounted by clamps ,one on boat the other on the wood and slide down to lock, see if yours is this way by pulling up and see if they come free.they are very easy to redo yourself for little expense, just make sure to use stainless staples.a gfood rainy day project to do in the garage.
As Release Time said, they are fairly easy to remove and recover espicially if your not too concerned about piping(1/8" round trim) on edges or any other trim that might be on original ones. Have seen some(GW) that have a few screws holding them to the boat as well as the clamps, usually on the bottom side out of sight. If you fold the corners around (rather then cutting and sewing them) be sure to position the folds to point down so you don’t create a pocket for water and junk to sit in. Put in a few grommets in the bottom edge as well to act as drains.

I am not sure about Chuck town but I recently got material to make a bow cusion and re cover my leaning post cusion. I went to an outlet that sells textiles, got a big “sheet” of closed cell foam ($50) and then a big roll of blue vinyl-like material. I think I spent a total of 63 bucks and just work on the stuff when the weather or the wife have me at home
Thanks for the info. They are the bolsters that slide into place, they arent the ones that button into place. so i dont think that i will be able to staple them together. There is that plastic piece on the top that slides them into place on the boat.
Those can be a little tougher as technically one needs to sew that plastic beading that goes in the ‘c’ channel onto the vinyl on most bolsters. My machine hates that stuff so I usually just replace it by sewing a 1/4" piece of line into a pocket along the top rear edge of bolster to hang them by.

get it done right the first time and support a great local business … Bendt Brothers
I wish I had an extra dollar every time I fixed or redid something that “a great local business” (none in perticular) didn’t do right the first, second or sometimes third time. One dollar bills add up pretty fast that way! Many ways to skin a cat.

$225 each might not be a bad price, depending on the situations. Typicially bolsters run $150-$200 depending on pleated or flat vinyl. If the mounting board is rotted, I can see $225 being fair. Also, a bolster typicially uses approx 12’’ of fabric. It takes the same amount of fabric to do 1 bolster as it does to do 4, since fabric is 54 inches wide.
Also, as far as the welting (or cording as others have called it). The purpose of this is to bridge the gap between the fabric and the boat, so you can not see the back of the bolster, and the staples. If you dont have a sewing machine and welting foot, simply take a 2’’ piece of vinyl, fold it in half, and staple it around the outer permieter. It should have enough body to it to bridge the gap. While it might not look as nice… it functions.
Also, as someone else mentioned… USE STAINLESS STEEL STAPLES!!! I can not stress this enough… you will be scrubbing rust stains off of your entire deck for years if you dont.
One other thing, dont skimp on the material. Do yourself a favor, and spend the extra $30 or so for the good vinyl. Nautolex and Bolta-Soft are 2 of our favorites.
Bolsters are something that anyone can do themselves if they put the time and effort into it, and have some simple tools around the house.
There is ayoung man in Summerville that works out of Pop’s Top Shop in Summerville ,875-5726,that does excellent cushion and vinyl work. He made a cushion for the front of my Sea Pro and it was very reasonable and it is holdong up great.
