Hey guys, I could use some assistance. I’ve been trying to add some custom ringtones to my new Verizon LG “qwerty” cell phone. I’ve used iTunes to make the ringtone, changed the extension from “m4a” to “m4r”, emailed it to the cell phone using the "vzwpix.com"extension, then opened the text message, which indicates that an attachment is there, but the ringtone won’t play. WHen I try to “save as ringtone” the phone gives me a “save error” message.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what is wrong, why the phone won’t play the ringtone?
thanks in advance!
tom
Is it an Android phone, or is it not a smartphone at all?
What’s the model number?

It’s not a smart phone. It’s an LG vx9200
Try Zedge.com, they have 1,000’s of free ones.

Have you tried using an MP3 encoded file with an .mp3 extension? I’m not sure that phone would know what to do with an .m4r file.
You can use BitPim and a micro-USB cable to copy files directly to the phone. Look at the link below for possible instructions. Ignore the talk about the phone not being directly supported by the software. The current version does support it.

Thanks for the link!. Unfortunately, in this case, I have a Mac and not a PC, so I can’t us the USB cable. But, I’ll try the sd card suggestion. If I need the driver for the phone to do this I’ll be out of luck! There’s no driver that operates on a Mac for this phone. Awful lot of work for such a simple thing!
You might not need a driver for the SD card solution. Put the SD card in the phone, power it up, and let it format the card / create whatever folders it needs. Take the SD card back out of the phone and use a card reader on your Mac to transfer the files into the correct folder on the card. Reinstall the card in the phone, and the ringtones should be there.
Before any of that, try sending an MP3 file instead of an M4A/M4R via MMS. That may solve the problem.

After spending an inordinate amount of time on this and with your help, I think I figured it out. The people from Verizon told me that the format that iTunes gives for ringtones are incompatible with the LG env3 phones. Your suggestion of checking an MP3 file worked, in that the MP3 song file would play on the phone. Google search yielded advice to use “audacity” to convert music files to the appropriate sized MP3 file. Then I used the sd card to move the mp3 file from the Mac to the LG phone. It recognized the format and played it as a sound file. Then I just saved it as a ringtone file. Darned complicated!
Capntang, Much appreciation for you help.
