Cut Mullet Question

Hey - I’m a long-time lurker, fishing north of y’all up around Georgetown. I enjoy the forum, drooled over the redfishville pics, and noticed that cut mullet is often the bait of choice. My experience with cut mullet has been more frustration than success, due to the fact that my cut bait is usually attacked immediately by pinfish or lizardfish. I’ve tried both fresh and frozen cut mullet, fishing the bait under corks, on carolina rigs, and carolina rigs using small floats to raise up the bait a little. Doesn’t matter, the trash fish attack and destroy it immediately. From the pics, it appears I’m fishing similar waters, but tough to say for sure. Any suggestions for keepin’ the bait around long enough for the redfish to find it? Thanx,

Maybe it could be the particular area being fished. Cut mullet parked directly next to or in the grass always works for me whenever everything else fails. Half a blue crab is great for the big ones also.

When I fish bushy park I have a lot of problems with crabs but then again they attract the reds so I don;t sweat it much. I usually take a finger mullet, whack him in half and lip hook it or if they are bigguns I either steak it or filet if it’s really big and drop it down. Use a big chunk… maybe it’ll last long enough for the reds to find it.
