Fished with a friend on the harbor for a few hours on Saturday and I didn’t have much luck. After watching plenty of flats boats work some spots at low tide with no luck I decided not to risk my deeper drafting boat and put out some cut mullet. Fished a medium depth spot on the edge of a channel and got constant action from some small sharks about 3’. Anyone care to help with a fish ID? They fought like a wet rag but I assume that was just the water temp.
smooth dogfish , this time of the year.
Yeah…smooth at stealing bait :). Sure was windy out there today!

Actually that’s a spiny dogfish, Squalus acanthias.
I hear they eat OK. Anyone ever try them?
John
Yes. Delicious with some lemon pepper or jamaican jerk seasoning on the grill. Sharks are mostly meat with fins, a tail, and a head attached. I’ve also eaten a few bonnets.
A friend of mine told me that they can have a high mercury level, so we stopped eating them since we started having kids. I will be back on them this summer. Sharks are some serious fun as far as fighting fish is concerned.

yes. spiny dogs are great as far as shark goes, urea is virtually undetectable. meat is freaky white, even in life. less concerned about bioaccumulation of mercury etc with small coastal species, but dogfish are notoriously slow-growing and long-lived.
fighting them gets really old sometimes, and they frequently “pup” on deck because they’re almost all gravid females here in winter. they’ll be here for a while longer, but migrate north when the water warms and are replaced by sharpnose for the warmer months. get bryan to bring you one, john!
