Any comments on the quality of a Daiwa Black Gold (BG 15) and what would be a good rod to match it up with? Looking for a rod in the $50-70 range. Thanks.
Quality? I don’t know about the new ones but the oldest reel I have that is still in service is a Diawa BG 20. It must be close to 25 years old, spent over 10 years full time on my offshore charter boat, caught hundreds of kings, cudas, dolphin, spanish and amberjack, and has caught thousands of trout and redfish since. Still working as good as new. It’s on the original Diawa rod that came with it (we won it in a fishing tournament).
For that price range, I would go with an Ugly Stik or Star rod. I prefer Star for action and casting distance.

Good reels for mono, suck for braid
I have mine on an Ugly Stick and it has served me well for 10 or 15 years. I agree with Feather Thrower, much better with mono.
