DaMMIT!

I hooked my first red otf today but i fakin lost it cause i am a dumbass and tied a crapping knot and it came undone… it was freakin big too!.. what knot do yall use to tie the leader to the fly?

Thanks

Good luck Bros

perfection loop, palamar, and the one that used to come in the orvis leader packages are my favorites
i like the uni knot too

Perfection loop, but make sure that you tie it properly. You just need enough of a loop to let the fly swing freely.

I would not worry about the type of knot, make sure there are no knicks or other blemishes in your line. I tie a basic cinch knot and have never had it fail.
Always check your leader.
Also, make sure you are using plenty of leader. Tony Royal at Bay Street outfitters says to use 17lb. I have lost fish with out enough leader weight.

chris.

All good points. And I would like to add spit. No… really, Spit.

A buddy of mine (a chemical engineer) who worked for Dupont (Stren fishing line, etc.) said they did tests on knots and the knots with spit always perform better. This is SCIENCE.

Don’t be shy with you spit when it comes to fishing knots.

i agree Ty, nothin makes a prettier knot than some spit, clinch knot too man, unless im usin a spoon fly or a siliclone on some 80lb shock tippet, the loop doesn’t appear to add any action to the fly

I agree with the comment about using strong enough leader material. I recommend at least 17 lb. I tie mono leaders using 40-30-20 lb. I also have had many fish break off in the grass on flourocarbon. I will NEVER use it in the grass again. It is not necessary.

I use the uni-knot 90% of the time and the loop only with merkins when I have enough time to get the knot perfect.

Another thing use only high quality preferably chemcially sharpened hooks. Leader material and hooks are the cheapest part of the sport.

Last Thursday.

I fish #12 leaders with 16lb tippet… and I havn’t broken one off yet this year (knock on wood)… Try a nonslip loop, or perfection loop. On grass flies it won’t make much of a difference, but on any fly that your going to be stripping in open water a loop knot will add all kinds of wiggle to the fly…

The biggest thing in the grass it to keep your drag set light, and clear your line smoothly once you hookup… don’t start horsing him right off the bat, give him a second to chill out then put the screws to him… Its not a spinning rod, you can’t fight a fish like it is…
