Daniel Island Crabbing

Well when you are unable to even use correct grammar, and have trouble with correct spelling of words every sentence, it is very hard to take you serious. If you attempted to present your problem on these forums in a much more educated and well-thought manner MAYBE everyone here would not be so quick to jump down your throat. Someone walks into a business and acts orderly and explains an issue they get taken care of. Walk in like a child stumbling and falling apart with words and get a cold shoulder. Welcome to “life” not just forums friend.

Hey Colongo. A few are smart a-ss on here but most are really good folks. I do agree with your point to some extent. Commercial crabbers are hard workers trying to feed their families using a legally accessible resource, but they do go a bit overboard sometimes. I had a creek I used to put my two pots in some years back until the commercial guys cleaned it out. Pots 50 yards apart from the mouth to as far back as he could get. He worked it until there were no more crabs to catch, then moved on to the next creek. There should be some level of common sense in regulating the industry. When crabbers from up north bring boats and 300 pots each down here because they have fished out their local waters, it does put too much pressure on our resource. Crabs are a public resource and there should be a way to balance the use. How would you guys on here feel about SAFMC giving 95+% of the snapper/grouper/dolphin quota to commercial guys? Since there is no quota for crabbers, they can take 95% or more. While Colongo went about it the wrong way, he does have a point.

Olde Man Charters

I’m gonna dip into this and will probably regret it. But to the point, I think blue crab are overharvested in this area. I am not in any way criticizing crabbers who work their butts off to make a living but rather the regulations. It seems there are more and more commercial crabbers vying for a catch over a declining resource. When are people going to wake up to the fact that the population is exploding here and the regulations are remaining constant. What suffers? Marine resources. Regulations must keep pace with population and pressure. Fire away.

I do think the influx of out of state commercial crabbers should be stopped.

When a bushel of crabs go for $120 or more, on, or around the Chesapeake Bay area, what do you expect to happen? If I was smart(not) I’d buy a small refrigerated truck and buy every crab SC crabbers could catch and drive them North! What is the price SC crabbers are getting for a bushel? $50/60 bucks:question: Penny, needs to chime in here!

I’ve got a very good friend who is a SC (Hilton Head) crabber. He has his very own refrigerated truck and almost his entire catch is sold in the Chesapeake Bay area.

Larry, just proves I’m not as smart as he is! I saw some Asian guy load his trunk with bushels of crab in St. Michaels, MD @ $120! And this was 2 years ago! I can remember when I was in my teens and people complained about paying $20 a bushel!

Totally agree and what the OP was concerned about. Though humorous I don’t think it was entirely appropriate to start off with two claims of being a Yankee. You would have to be a fool to think there hasn’t been a massive increase in commercial harvest in the last 10-20 years and that it hasn’t affected the population.

How many people here grew up crabbing of the nearest bridge, dock, or beach? Did you enjoy your time doing so? Would you like your kids to be able to do the same thing? Well so would Colongo and he can’t because he, like the rest of us, is covered up with people that crab 24/7.

Maybe banning the export of crabs is the answer or limiting the pots in the county. I don’t want to ruin anyone’s livelihood but I don’t think it’s fair for the waters to be so commercialized that the recreational guys can’t enjoy the public resources. This can be said for all fishing, crabbing, shrimping, etc. A problem we all share.
