Daniel Island Crabbing

The crabbing for Blue Crab is being wiped out on Daniel Island by commercial crabbers. They have crabbing pots all over the island, outside the creeks, inside the creeks, all around our private docks and even all around the public docks. There are no crabbing left for all that live there. We pay high taxes and this is what we get in return. Our families have no way of crabbing there. We went crabbing the other day and we were lucky to get 3 crabs all day. This needs to stop. What can we do? Help anyone. Thanks

Better contact the crabber barons! How long was the drive from Cleveland?

Move back up North?

I was raised on Sullivans Island. I’ve contacted our Congressman. Which you know nothing about.

pray tell what would you have your congressman do about commercial fisherman working within the boundaries of the law do to help you. Ever thought you just do not know how to catch a crab?

I’ve been crabbing longer than. I’m talking about lots of kids that like to learn how to crab. And catch them… I guess this conversation makes you a senior member look smart. Opps!! Screw all the kids right?

conservation? There is no shortage of blue crabs in south carolina. You are not entitled to a public resource because of where you pay taxes. sorry if putting in work to catch some inconveniences you.

A good start would be for all those waterfront home owners to quit using fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides on their fancy yards and golf courses, which all end up in the creeks and rivers. The commercial crabbers will thank you for it

You’re ignorant.

No one said anything like “screw the kids”. You can’t just make stuff up; it doesn’t work that way buddy.

I’m sorry you aren’t very good at catching crabs for your kids. A better way to go about this would be to come on here and ask for advice on how to increase your catch. The fine people of CF.com have nothing to do with your commercial crabber issues and most members here would normally go out of their way to show you how if you just asked politely… but probably not with an attitude like this.

If you had an ounce of an idea of the level of hard work commercial fishing or crabbing was, you’d shut your mouth. I can assure you these crabbers are 98% struggling to feed their families by putting crab pots near “your” water.

Get a clue.

There are rules concerning how close a commercial crab trap can be placed near docks. Just saying!

Excuse me for being alive!! So all the the water ways are owned by cabers ? Its like they are the only ones that work so hard … Dam! We all work hard!! What I’m saying is don’t cover the dam island with traps!! Theres a big harbor out here.

It’s legal.

Quit complaining.

Call your congressman.

Thanks Marsha . Al I was asking was for some help.

I like your pic Sailfish seems you have a head problem.

Colongo!!! Welcome to CFC!!! Glad to have you!!

If you just do a little search on this site there is a ton of information on how to catch crabs. It is really quit easy and they are everywhere around our coast!! No shortage on crabs, probably just your inexperience on catching them!

First of watch the sales papers and find some Turkey necks on sale. Then get a role of string. Then find some big rocks that will stay tied to the string. Next get yourself a net. Find anywhere on Daniels island that you can get access to the water. Throw the turkey neck with rock to weight it down in the water and after a few moments slowly pull it towards you and have your net ready to get Mr./Mrs. crab!!! Fun stuff!!!

Also did you know that you too can put out a crab pot? DNR has a web sight on the WWW that has tons of information and legal stuff as well.

Again welcome to this sight!!! Don’t worry about the commercial crabbers, they have been around much longer than you have and we still have tons of the underwater Buzzards!! No way will they be able to wipe out all the under water Buzzards that you are so worried about!!!

Where’s Toppy Blue?

you got one thing dead on.

welcome to the site.

“I am not involved in this thread, only helping Fred understand who he is dealing with.”

It used to be a good spot to crab, Thanks Fred67. I know how to crab. I just feel like we don’t want to drive 30 miles to crab. We used to walk two blocks and go crabbing and load up. not anymore. I have nothing against crabbers. 6 years ago the island was covered with a crabber from Delaware. He did the same thing covered the island with pots. Then shipped the crabs back up to Delaware, wow thats good for SC crabbers HUH?? I put that one to a halt for our locals crabbers. So sailfish, don’t call people ignorant. I thought that was a smart move for locals crabbers. Fred 67 I was raised on Sullivans Island We all hit Pit St. bridge in 1958 long before it was turned into a park.I have showed 100’s of people how to crab. And Cracker Larry the crabs must like the fertilizers they sure are big ones on the island, the crabbers seem to think so.

I’m done with this site it seems everyone is a smart a-ss thanks for your help
