Left DIM at 4:30am yesterday with Cane Pole, a friend of his and mine. We ran out to the ledge in a confused 2’ sea. Had our first dolphin within 10 minutes and another about 20 minutes later. I put the perfect Dukmon (right through the eyes) gaff shot on it and it jumped off the gaff and we lost it. It was the biggest one of the day, probably 20lb+; I hear it is now looking (ha-ha) for a leader dog. The seas really kicked up about 9am solid 3-4’s @ 3sec. with the tops blowing off. Our plan was to troll out towards the 380 looking for a temp break but after going 4 miles offshore I decided to stay close to the ledge in case conditions got worse. This was a smart and cautious decision but turned out to be a bad decision as I heard that there was a good bite at the 380. Seas eventually laid down.
We fished the outcrop area for most of the day with Fish-n-Mistress and ended with 5 dolphin and one nice hoo. My hand scale was broken so our estimate on the hoo was around 35-40lbs.

Same thing for us. We got out to about 25 miles and started trolling in 75’. Had a big school of dolphin come up and tear at everything we had, pink, blue/green, even the red and black on the downrigger. Only two of us on the boat and with the wind kicking up to 15 to 20 mile an hour gusts it was all we could do to steer and reel. Ended up losing all of the fish! Decided to troll a little longer and the waves started piling up on us while the forecast is still calling for 5-10 knots and seas of 2’. The waves, 3’-4’ and close, were exceeding my comfort level so we decided to bravely run away and get closer to shore and stopped at some live bottom in 55’. The winds kicked up real nasty for about 15 minutes then the seas calmed down in about 20 minutes. Went back out to 25 miles but the dolphin had moved off. When the winds were kicking the flyers were everywhere from 60’ on out. When they laid down there wasn’t one in sight. Ended up bottom fishing the Gardens and only got a nasty bite on the finger from a sharpnose to show for it. They were thick out there. Still, it was better than working!

Same story for us, winds and seas kept us inshore of the 380 and we never made it to where the bite and the warm water was. Went 2 for 7 on the dolphin and 1 for 1 on the golden grouper. Due to the bag of bananas someone hid on my boat apparently we couldn’t keep them on the hook and had one line get wrapped and cut on a really nice bull. After all that we tried to fish some excellent numbers I have on the ledge and in the gardens but even with awesome shows on the bottom finder the bite was just really mushy, nothing but little b-liners, short porgies, and plenty of sharks. It was a strange day, saw not ONE weedline all the way out to 650 feet, water temp never got over 72, forecast was wrong, and there was a full moon that really put the queer on the bite I think. If it had been just a touch calmer I would have picked up and run south to 226, in hindsight I should’ve just sucked it up and done it, that’s where the bite was.
I might need a “BAND*” Aid

Did you hear Fisn-N-Mistress and I talking n the radio? Didn’t know you went fishing.
I filed a float plan did you see it? Give me a call next time, your brother-in-law (or some relation) was on our boat.

Eyyeball,
Glad to see you still remember how to log on to this sight. Even for the banana bag on the boat, still had a good time! Maybe for once the moon, wind, temp., and fish will all line up and we can fill the boat.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day. FISH 24/7---- 25 Grady w/ a couple of Gas Guzzling 175 Johnsons “O-SEA-D” the old “Havanadaydream”
