Left the dock with Fish-N-Kid and Wando Big Dog a little late because of the lines in time of 8am for the SCSSA Early Bird. We were expecting a rough ride out and we were not surprised to find the forecast to be accurate. Stopped just outside of the jetties to put the curtains up and hunker down. Slow Ride out to the RT at 18-20 knots, I was disappointed for my crew mostly because my boat can handle the seas much better that it did as my rough water skills are not what they could be. We put lines in at 8am in 125ft 4.5 nm short of our target and high speed trolled a little looking for a Wahoo while we rigged baits. Started trolling out and a little south and did not get our first strike until about 10:30 a Wahoo on the Yozuri Bonita close to the boat fish got off soon after, I get a lot of strikes on that plug but only have caught dolphin on it. About an hour later we get a solid hook up on a bull that looked to be 30-35lbs when it went in the box.
Things got slow again and we got a call from Cracker on the secret bat channel that there was a hot bite near the 380, so we decided to pick up an run 13nm to the bite. We picked up a few more Dolphin and lost a few and even saw a Billfish slashing at bait about 50 yards in front of the boat.
I just wanted to take a moment and thank Cracker publicly for calling us in to the fish we were having the makings of a tough day he really helped us out. I think this is a great example of the spirit of the SCSSA and Cracker himself. This was a tournament but he was thinking of a fellow SCSSA member and he was more concerned to see us find some fish than possibly keeping the location to himself and scoring a nice fish to weigh. I really appreciate that and hope to return the favor some day.
BTW that 30+ lb fish weighed 27+ at the dock. Ride in was nice at 27kn, looking forward to the banquet on Tues. Thanks Fish-N-Kid and WBD we had a great crew I just wish I could have put us on some more quality fish.

Any time sugar britches. I meant to tell you 10 miles outside of the 380 hole.
And btw, just about any cc boat was gonna have a tough time with head seas that tight and steep. Good thing the wind was not honking at least
Put another log on the fire…
Wish I coulda been out there with you DOD, but the wife had other plans for us. Glad you got on some fish though.
One more thing; Fish-N-Kid is worse than having a banana on a boat, leave that boy at the dock next time and you’ll likely crush the fish.
Sorry the weather was so bad.

I’m back and I’ve promised to behave this time.

I don’t know every time I fish with the Kid we have pretty good days. I have hooked Wahoo, Dolphin, & Sailfish when he has been on the boat. Our largest fish was all on him, dropped the bait back after he struck, missed the fish and dropped back again and got him to the boat in rough seas. He will be on the boat for all of the SCSA events unless there is a natural disaster somewhere in the US.

The kid and I always have good days. We learned how to rig together on our first few offshore trips together. He prefers wire (monel) over rubberbands.
