Datil Pepper Hot Sauce

Just put the first batch of the year on the stove.
My plants are loaded so hopefully I get a couple more batches. Had to move them inside, we had a pretty good frost this morning.

I grow Datil’s as well. They are hotter than I usually like but have great flavor. One of my moms best friends families has been in St Augustine since the late 1600 or early 1700’s and she brings me some awesome stuff that she and her family make with datil’s

I lived in St Augustine for 20 years, I fished a lot and hung around with the Casto's, one of the original families. My datil plants seem to be hotter than normal. I was able to keep them going through the winter last year by bringing them inside when it was really cold. Wonder if that has something to do with it Can't beat shrimp and sausage perlo with a couple datils thrown in. Just got to remember to take them out before you serve. Left one in the perlo after too many beers one time. Wasn't a pleasant experience for my buddy that found it.

Mine were pretty hot as well. I was able to keep my last 4 plants alive for 3 years but they ended getting covered up with aphids so I saved some seeds and will start over this spring. They are super tough plants though. I had to move my last set of plant off the porch to pressure wash one day and forgot to put them back up. The deer ended up eating about the 50 or so peppers on the plants along with the plants to the point I figured they were done. All 4 came back extremely strong. The next couple of days after the deer ate the peppers I watched our resident herd really closely hoping to see a one poo and take of bucking.

Datil peppers make everything taste better!
Does anyone have a good Minorcan chowder recipe?
I tried making some a month ago but it didn’t have the flavor I was after.
I think I used too much tomato paste.

Use petite diced tomatoes versus tomato paste. Here is a link to a good recipe.
