day time shrimping

I’ve always night shrimped off the flats by fort johnson.

however my dad asked me about possibly taking my grandpa (just turned 92) for one last shrimp trip. I know he cant do night shrimping.

I have no clue on day time shrimping and have never attempted it.

any advice on how/when/where?

I’ve heard about bulls bay but I dont think he’d be ok with the trip up there, shrimping, and the trip back. something where if something happened we could pull up to a landing real quick in the area and my mom/aunt could pick him up real quick and (god forbid) take him to the doctor or whatever.

do you still use bait during the day/poles? or just cast into water where they are jumping and such?

are there even place in the charleston harbor to shrimp during the day?

sound like deep holing would be your best option ? I’ve never done it (successfully) but have seen ppl doing it outside of crab bank

Daytime BB is the only place I know local. Yes on the bait. Garris (S end) may not be accessible at all tides for your boat.

We only shrimp daytime and still caught limits. For you the best bet is to just take him out for the day and see how others in Chas do it. Just anchor out AT A DISTANCE and be respect the wake. We putt around shrimpers due to being on a deck and throwing a net. Never cut between poles, ever. You still need pole tags and bait. I wouldn’t attempt this at his age.

I am a woman and have been throwing since I was a kid. This may look easy but you need a good team both drive both throw the net, and after 6-7 hours it can wear you out…especially at 90ish. If he falls in YOU have to lift him in the boat, he will not be able to lift himself back in. We have 10-15k West winds Saturday…not good at any level.

Muddy water is key to good daytime shrimping. So a strong tide around big mud flats will give you what you need. An overcast day will help some but, in clear water it is usually when the sun touches the tree tops before they start to move. A flat close to a deep channel that drops off fast always seems to work for us. Can’t help you on Chas location. We shrimp down near Beaufort in the sound. Bulls Bay is closest to you I am aware of.

You can’t catch 'um on the couch!

Deep-hole-n! Couple hours before dark or in the morning, catch just as many as baiting anyways.

grew up shrimping here and pop is who taught my dad and then taught me. he wont fall in.

I almost want to get out his old 39’ sein net and just go wading up in a creek with it while he sits on the boat.

I would review Murphy’s law and make sure you got your life vests on out there !!!
