As the mahi run comes to a close, Id thought Id ask about daytime sword out of Charleston. Can it be done without running all the way to the Bump and spending the night? Ive heard some do it in 1000ft during the day which is very reachable. Any recent attempts?

Never tried daytime before bc I didn’t have the gear, but got the reel to do it with over winter so plan on giving it a go as soon as there is a nice day. Lots of stuff on youtube about it. Have heard 1500ft is the target depth but you could get out there in no time in that boat.
Nothing recent, But as Fortunate Son mentioned 1500 was our target depth. Night fishing maybee a little deeper. If day fishing i wouldn’t do it without an electric reel. Night time, good underwater attractant lights and three rods 50’ 100’ & 150’ with big whole squid. Get a harpoon.
Capt. Louis DeFusco has put on a good seminar on swords. It is a long video with tons of great information. Put the this video up on a smart T.V. and it will give you tons of great tips.
+1 on Stanczyk knowing his stuff. We’ve (wife and I) fished with Nick before he got his Freeman.
Nick seems to be using RJ Boyle’s pre-rigged baits quite a bit these days. Might be worth ordering some if you’re going to give it a shot. Otherwise finding a nice ledge and drifting in about 1500-1600ft seems to be the way most I’ve seen are doing it. Electric reels do make it easier, but it seems plenty hand crank them too. Gotta keep your eyes peeled on the rod tip - the bites can look pretty subtle at that depth.
This is also known as “rich man’s catfishin’”. You heard it here first…
Haven’t seen you post in a long time! Hope you are doing well. I’m going to use your line with a few friends… “rich man’s Catfishin”… That’s a good one!
Nick makes sure to put RJ’s baits on his social media posts but they are usually rigging up fresh maui bellies and bonita that come in to the marina from their regular charters. One thing I’ve learned since moving to Key West is that 90% of the “pro-staff” recommendations you see are a sham.
Find a ledge or hump (doesn’t have to be much relief) in 1200-1800 ft off Charleston with bait in the lower 100ft of the water column and you will find a sword eventually. Marking bait is the most important aspect of consistently drawing bites. It’s an all-day affair with 1-3 bites so be patient and dedicate your trip to it.
Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.
1400 -1800 feet anywhere past 226 is good around the humps. If you go at night you don’t have to drop as deep making it easier to reel with no electric reel. If you go during the day you have to drop all the way down (where they hang out) during the day which is too much for a man to handle in my personal opinion all day. But I’m sure it can be done!
I caught this one on Nov 30, 2009 at 10:30 am 20 miles south of the 226 Hole on a 28ft Scout Center Console. I broke a daytime one off in May and June as well. I caught 5 at night in October. Pretty much all year long a week before or after the full moon south off the 226 hole. If you want to go and have me show you and film, let me know. You will need a 100ft wind on leader https://amzn.to/2KJAuLP to start and do not forget the light https://amzn.to/2KK7jIb “No light…No Bite”. An electric reel would help too… https://amzn.to/2NgN6vo.
