Gotta a question, I am getting a used boat that has name on side of it and another large sticker that has to go.
Need to know the best way to remove these.
Thanks for any help.

I had a lot of pin striping on my boat that I removed with a decal remover from Harbor Freight. It was basically a soldering iron with a razor blade attached. Worked great

Heat gun.
Wife’s hair dryer. Works great, just don’t let her know you’re using it.

Heat gun or hair dryer works very well with a razor blade. You will probably have a halo of the decal after you remove it. Some light wet sanding will take care of it. I like to start with 600-800 grit and finish with 2000 then compound and wax.

3m makes a general adhesive remover that works well to get the left over residue off.

Goo Gone or Oops will take off any adhesive residue .
There is a rubber eraser wheel that 3M makes that goes into a drill. It is made to remove pin stripping. The only problem, is that they are $15 a piece. If the decal is rally big, you could go through a good many. I used 3 to remove the old name off my Bertram.
They work great, and won’t hurt anything.
You may have to do some buffing on the fiberglass due to hull fading. I moved the name on my boat last summer and even after hours of compounding you can still vaguely see the old name on the side.
This is an 07 Key West (Blue sides) in excellent condition. The stickers were not added till around 09 or 10 and it has a cover that extends below the stickers. Hopefully not much color fade has taken place.
Thanks again, y’all have been very helpful.

Hey man, I had the same issues a couple months ago when I got my new-to-me boat. The answer for me was a blow-dryer, a “scraping blade” (it’s basically a 4 inch razor blade, Lowe’s has one that comes with extra blades. After it’s off, use goo-gone. Let the goo-gone sit for about 15 minutes then wipe off with a rough towel.
Also, on a side note: I don’t know if you’ve ever heard about or used “On and Off” but wow… that **** works! I had some water lines on mine and that stuff is absolutely amazing. It’s about 15 bucks at Worst Marine. I put it all over my whole boat and it cleaned up drastically.
Good luck man!

I heard that re-naming a boat is bad luck… LOL

Glenn - after the vinyl and the adhesive is off - what you see - if anything-is not removable. The area of the boat that has not been covered by decals has faded slightly - the area covered by decals has been protected from fade. Do not sand - it will do no good.

NN-
g8rnsc is spot on. if you do have a noticeable color difference after you take the decals off, using a good compound/polish/wax process with a machine can reduce the effect tremendously. let me know if you need a hand.

I would think twice about removing decal unless you really hate the name. I did this once and you could see the decal because the fiberglass around the decal had faded. No way to fix this despite what everyone will tell you. I tried everyting imaginable and even had a professional come out and look at it. I ended up having to pay someone to hand paint the name of the boat(old name)back over where the decal was originally because it was impossible to get a new decal to match up perfectly.
