decarbonizing

We use a fuel injection flush on automotive engines, and I know it works well with 4 stroke outboards.

So I’m going to try it on the optimax…

Instead of the usual flush, I’m just going to run the engine off a small gas can loaded with fuel and seafoam.

worked on an old motorcycle I bought…

Anyone ever try this on a 2 stroke?

Yes. Lots of info on the web about doing this on 2 strokes. I’ve done it on mine a couple of times with positive results.

If you are trying to decarbon, I’m not sure a fuel/seafoam mixture through the gas line is really your best bet. I doubt you will get enough seafoam through the line to actually decarb it much. Might remove any varnish in your carbs, if an Optimax is carbed.

I have done decarbs on smaller two-cylinder 2 strokes with reasonable results, the motor idled better for sure. I simply squirted it into the carb intake while giving it a lot of throttle. Gets a lot more Seafoam into it in very short order.

The method he’s talking about, I think, uses a heavy ratio of seafoam. I’ve done it both ways. Can’t really say if one is more effective than the other.

I have loaded up a gas can with cleaner and run for a while. I like that it cleans the fuel system as well, not just decarb the cylinders. I do think that the foamy cleaners sprayed directly in the cylinders like deep creep or valvtect do a better job.

I did an extensive decarb on my motor about 2 years ago. I switched to xd100 oil and alternate between Lucas and startron when I add gas. I have near 0 carbon on my piston crowns and head domes when checked with my bore scope.

^^^like he said. I would spray some of these directly onto the cylinders as well with the motor tilted all the way up. Then run it out. You would be amazed at how much carbon can build up on the cylinders, and that is where scoring starts if it ever gets lodged under the rings.

Mine is a carbed 2 stroke, but I ran half a can through the carb, and that blew out a lot. Then I sprayed a can divided among all 4 cylinders and let it sit over night. Had a ton of gunk come out at the prop. and my WOT gained about 150 rpm. Runs smooth now.

This opti is a direct fuel injection system. It uses fuel and air injectors directly in the top of the jug.

I just wanted to follow up and say that it worked out great. I ran the motor off 1.5 gallons of gas and 2 16oz cans of seafoam. I stopped half way through to fish and let it settle in, then finished the can half an hour or so later.

The motor is much smoother and has a lot less noise.

I wanted to say thanks to the coast guard guys on the stono tonight.

As I was working, they idled by a few times watching me. Either I was entertaining, or they were making sure I didnt need help.

They would’ve thought my motor was on fire. It smokes like crazy when I decarb.

When I did mine I thought for sure the firemen were going to show up. I lived on James Island and shut down Camp Rd for about 5 mins. It was horrible. The black slop that ran out of the prop could have been used to repave the road.

Muddy, glad to hear that it worked!
