Deep Hole Cast Net

I just noticed that the regulations for the upcoming shrimp season says that the mesh size for your cast net must be 1/2" minimum. Mine is just shy of the mark at 3/8", so it looks like I need to buy a new cast net.

My question is whether or not I can just buy a ‘deep hole’ cast net and use it for both, or is the deep hole net mostly useful only for that specific purpose.

Thanks!

deep hole net is desgined sink slowly so may not be great for baiting as alot of shrimp hear the net coming and dart, but as long as its 1/2 or bigger you should be legal

can you swim 5 miles? “NO” then what is the difference in 5 miles and 50 miles!!! Go for it!

Thanks Tlread. It sounds like it will be best to start a cast net collection.

X2 on what tlread said…also, even the nets with sown in tape are somewhat bulky to throw…and unless the skrimps are really thick, a deep hole net will wear you out if ya gotta make 6-10 passes on your poles…and if you duct tape your net, it really is a pain to throw…

Maybe go 5/8’s, that is the advice I got, then you have larger shrimp and can let the little creek shrimp grow up.

All my shrimp nets are 5/8" now. Standard is 8’ for poles, a 10’ if the shrimp are thick, and 10’ net with tape if I want to try deep holes.
Throwing a taped net on poles would be too hard. Taped nets also sink slower and so drift farther in currents.

I bait in 8-13’ of water. Always use a 5/8" x 8’ super-pro net with tape. Even at 10’, the tape keeps the net open better and it does not really slow the fall much.
