Deep-Hole questions

I really don’t shrimp, but I have seen a lot of boats deep-holing on my way in from fishing this fall and wanted to try it out sometime.

I see slack tide is better, does it matter if it is low or high? I see a lot of boats in the harbor around low tide, but is high fine as well?

Also, does time of day make a difference? Low tide this coming weekend will be 8 or 9 AM. Would it be better to go early morning around low tide or in the afternoon around high? I’m not looking for any secrets and won’t be stealing anyone’s shrimp, I don’t even eat them! Just looking to try it out sometime to say I’ve done it. PM me if that is better.

Thanks

I’ve always done it around low tide. An hour to an hour and a half either side of it. Heard stories of high tide shrimping but I’ve never seen any caught then.

My experience is that time of day doesn’t matter. Just whenever low tide occurs.

Hope this helps.

I have been deep holing for a few years now. These are some things I have noticed. Deep hole shrimping works better in clearer water. Less tide movement is better. This occurs during the quarter tide cycles. Shrimp one hour on either side of the tide. Doesn’t matter if it is High Tide or Low Tide. Big water equals big shrimp. Sun in the 10 o’clock to 2 o’clock position works best. Shrimp will bunch-up just as the tide changes. The absolute best shrimping tides are 3-4 days prior to a Full or New moon. Throw a heavy net that sinks fast with 5/8" mesh. I have filled more than 2/3 a cooler in 3 throws!

Shrimp are not always there, but it can be very rewarding.
