Deep holing

ALOT of bait shrimp in the creeks right now, and I’ve had a couple of trout spit up some really nice ones recently too. Has anyone heard or been deep holing in the harbor yet?? Is it too early in the season to start?

I’ve heard nothing but good things about the shrimp so far this year… so that’s promising, I worry that they may come and go before shrimp baiting season start though??

For what it’s worth, the white roe (mature) shrimp were still being caught within a few miles of the coast throughout the winter. Mature white and brown shrimp catches continue to be good.

As far as the fear of the shrimp population ending early, I think otherwise. Mature white shrimp being caught close to shore in mid winter suggests a good hatch. The heavy freshwater influx throughout the winter insures good nutrients for young white shrimp. Lower salinity in the areas that young white shrimp are maturing decreases predation due to this fresh water influx. Fish such as reds and trout tend to stay away from low salinity.

It is always a guessing game, but all indications point towards a good season.

This sounds great. This will be my first baiting season when it arrives.
