After waiting and waiting for Florida Boy to call the wave forecast for Thursday, Chip, Shane and Michael decided to go for the deep water fish anyway:smiley:. Departed out of D.I. marina at 6:30 headed for the S.W.Banks. First drop was in 150’, water temp was a frigid 58 degrees. Hit several numbers in the area between 150’ and 185’ and never found any big fish. Limited out quickly on the endangered red porgy. Caught several nice knobbed porgies and a ton of sharks. Radioed the 2 other boats we were fishing with and told them were were going to try our luck in 120’. Hit 6-8 spots in 120’ without even 1 bite. Decided to hit Red Banks in 110’ - 115’. Nothing! Thought we should try catching some CBASS and proceeded to Y-73 area. Chip proceeded to hook up 2 slob CBASS, large 16"-17". I hooked up too and the game was on. We drift fished the area for 30 minutes, putting 16 large CBASS (all over 14") into the kill box.
Being the nice guys that we are, Michael radios the other boats and tells them of our find. They race to the scene and decide to do a SHORT BUS move and fish right next to us[:0] Just kidding guys! (we asked them to join us folks so it was OK with us)
Funny thing, after sells and 23’s boats joined the scene, the blackfish bite died. All the slobs stopped eating and the 10" to 12" fish moved right in. It was nearly 4:45 so we decided to do a quick offshore boat cleaning and proceed to shore. Left Y73 at 5:15 and were back into the harbor by 6:00. Water was so flat that we ran 5400 RPM on Michael’s Yamaha 350 all the way in.
Michael, always a pleasure to fish with you, even if you wanted to through me in with all the ribbing yesterday! Glad you brought me back to shore with you:smiley:. Had a great time even if the bite was SLOW. Final totals:
16 CBASS (all over 14")
3 limits of red porgies
3 large knobbed porgies
Shane
Very good to meet you and the rest of the gang yesterday. Michael’s 350 Yamaha sounded an awful lot like a small block Chevy when you guys came motoring by. SWEEEET
There is nothing - absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Kenneth Grahame
It really was a fun day to be out on the water. Being able to come and go at full throttle in early March was awesome. We were able to fish 3 boats side by side w/o any problems. That’s a nice day on the pond. It didn’t hurt to put a few fish in the box either:smiley:.
3 boats, but did see a commercial boat setting blackfish traps in 110’. Really was surprised that there weren’t more boats out yesterday. Must have been too cold of a start.
Those numbers aren’t secret…so we didn’t mind gettin’ close. Besides, that was half the fun of yesterday was being close enough and calm enough to talk smack.
Saw several commercial boats in the area setting BSB traps.
