Not sure what was going on Yesterday. I saw more doe moving from 1100-1600 than I think I ever have. Got to witness two separate doe standing in the middle of a dirt road nursey a babe. Odd thing this year is I have not seen many twins. Saw quit a few being born about 2 months ago and about the same starting two weeks ago. Almost like two distinct ruts. Should be a good season!
How about that fetal study Polly, what did you come up with in your area for the full rut?
By the way very nice Dove patch. how high is the fence, suprprized the deer arenāt jumping it. Got a patch not too far from Sniders with a 10 foot fence and have found deer in it. Springs in their feet!
I work out at kiawah and although it is not uncommon to see deer all the time I did see alot of deer movement from 2-4pm I thought is was odd as well. especially yearlings moving around.
Month later and the does are still coming out early, this was about 1600. Have seen a few bucks, but most are still on camera after dark. Looks like I may have a chance at a nanny in a month or so. One old girl had what looked to be a couple week old spot with her.
I sometimes wonder if our season should be moved Sept 15 to February. Would keep pressure of the little ones getting chased through the woods.
Iāve always thought that. January is a slow outdoors month and hunting in Jan would be great instead of sweating in tje swamp at 100 degrees in August.

Seriously though, I donāt participate in the 8/15 opener so I donāt have a dog in that fight but I would love to see the season run through the end of January as opposed to ending 1/1. I could definitely get behind that movement.

Most, if not all does are bred late September-November, so if you get it right and shoot a doe, she will be carrying a fawn or 2. If thatās the case, you just removed 3 deer from the herd, and you get the unpleasant experience of dropping the fetus in a gut pile.
What about button bucks? I have witnessed more of them killed late season, because Johnny Red is trying to play catch-up, and f>cks up thinking its a doe.

You are not thinking it through. Only so many buck tags, and Iād imagine now that doe tags can be used when ever, more does will be killed. Iām thinking all the does and extremely young fawns getting run through the woods in the first month could be stopped.

You need to lighten up a bit. Sure you hate dog hunting and wonāt allow any Military looking rifle on your property, but not everyone thinks like you do. Iām going to use my sonās .458 socom (300 grain Nosler Ballistic Tipā¦opting out on the 600grain) to knock one in the head this year, just cause I can. I may stand on a couple of dog drives, and will hunt some off horse back. I donāt fault you one bit for wanting to do QDMA on your property in hopes of a trophy buck, donāt fault me or others for not caring about a trophy. For some itās the thrill of the hunt regardless of size. Is that wrong?

First of all,no healthy bucks are shedding their antlers in November and only the smaller bucks may shed during the last two weeks of December. I would also like to see the season go until the end of January.Maybe does should only be shot during the first two months of the season in order to stop the killing of pregnant does.Maybe have a weight limit on the does like we do on our club to stop the killing of button bucks.We also donāt shoot anything less than a four point.And Fred,I donāt think the running of fawns is an issue,the dogs canāt smell them very well and it doesnāt happen much on our club.Besides all the coyotes are harassing them 24/7.One final thought,I believe the dog hunters are killing most of the coyotes,weāve already shot five in two days.We havenāt shot at a deer yet.haha

Maybe you don't like what I post, but I am not angry..... and why do you think that was directed towards you? Paranoid, maybe?? In my post, I mentioned nothing of hounds, nor military grade firearms.....perhaps you're still agitated that we have certain rules on our property? To each his own.
I havenāt falsified anything. What I posted is based on personal encounters throughout the last 20 years, of managing a small herd of our States whitetail deer.
Lastly, I mentioned not one thing about QDMA, I adhere to SOME of their practices, but no two properties are the same, and one has to find what best suits their wants/needs.
In all of my years hunting in SC, western KY and MD, Iāve never come across a buck that has shed its antlers in November (yes, I know how to identify a buck without antlers). I canāt say Iāve seen any discernable percentage drop them in December for that matter. MDās bow season run to the end of January and countless bucks are killed every year with complete sets of antlers. Here in SC, we run countless trail cameras on our property (right around 3k acres) and I consistently see bucks (pictures) carrying antlers into March, with the majority dropping in late January/February.
Iām not saying it (shed antlers in Nov/Dec) canāt happen. Iām simply saying itās not anything Iāve ever seen or experienced.

Poly makes valid points that I honestly believe he has learned through years of management on his property in the lowcountry. I have seen similar myself and things are set up properly in my eyes season wise for how I like to hunt.

I agree, Polly does make some valid points on some hunting issues. Healthy bucks droping horns in November? I Have been hunting for 40+ years and never seen that. Actually Iāve never seen a buck drop horns in December. Iām sure it happens, but not the norm.
