Deewee's Kayak Fishing

Hey,

I had the opportunity to stay with some friends on Deewees Island over the weekend. I took along my 17’ Impex Serenity touring kayak. I had a great time fishing, catching several good sized redfish and a flounder or two. I mainly fished in the Deewees Inlet, casting onto oyster beds. I was using an assortment of 1/4 oz jig heads and several different colors of saltwater assassin bodies. Something kept biting my plastics in half. Any idea what it might have been? I thought about rigging a stinger but didn’t have the right size hook with me.

I will be coming back down to Deewees on the 20th-24th of Oct. and I’m bringing my boat along again. I’d love to find some other holes to fish up that way. My boat gives me decent range so I wouldn’t mind heading up Bull Island way or along the back side of Capers. Also, would it be worth while to land on Capers and surf fish the beach for redfish?

If anyone would like to come along, I wouldn’t mind the company either.

Thanks,

bluefish, my guess.
when I start getting short strikes on artificials or live bait I use a tool I picked up at a outdoors show. it’s used to tread live bait (but it also works on artificials) long skinny piece of metal with a tiny latch hook on the end.

insert in bait mouth push tool through length of bait out anal vent open latch on tool hook put loop from snelled hook in hook on tool and close latch.

pull back up through bait and out mouth unhook loop and tie on line clip on swivel, however you choose.

live bait stays alive a surprisingly long time, but I’ve had great results with a long dead minnow. The live bait stays on the hook alot longer with this method, and I’ve caught many bluefish with this method. they are notorious for nipping off tails on rubber baits. works great for flounder too.

Where would I find one of those tools? Do you have a manufacturer?

Thanks,

Steve

YEA THAT WOULD BE EITHER BLUEFISH OR PINFISH THEY BITE MY GRUBS IN HALF ALL THE TIME.

Ya’ll going out Thurs or Friday, 20th and 21st? I’d like to tag along.

Probably Friday…depends on the tide. I’ll be coming down to Deewees on Thursday evening. Will probably launch from IOP Marina. I will know more as we get closer to the time. Would love to have you along.
