Have a garage beer/bait fridge that stinks from the bait in the freezer (shrimp, mullet, fiddlers). It’s mainly the fridge part that stinks.
Last week, took everything out of the multiple ziplocks and sealed them in food saver packs. While the stink is better, it’s not gone like I was hoping.
Today, I put boxes of baking soda in both the fridge and freezer to try and soak up some of the odors.
Anyone have a solution?
My biggest concern is my beer smelling like bait…
I had a refrig/freezer used as you described that somehow cord got
pulled , was gone for two weeks and was home for another week before
odor told me something was wrong in hooterville. Cleaned out and tried usual stink remedies ,nothing worked, soda/drink bottles would seem to hold odor …Anyway>>>>>>>>
Used to be a commercial grade product sold in janitorial supply houses, think it was called odor ban , clean and disinfect with bleach solution then wet wipe with odor ban , let dry and air out,
worked for me , hope it helps.
The freezer cools the fridge. Find the stink in the freezer and your good. You may have had a little leakdown into the fridge, if that happened bleach on a rag with a heavy wipe down is your best bet.

I had a big upright bait freeze for our charter boats in my garage. It had about 300 pounds of squid, 300 pounds of cigar minnows and spanish sardines, and 1,000 ballyhoo in it. We left town for 2 weeks one summer and came home to find a horrendous goo running out from under the garage door and down the driveway. You could smell it a block away! Poor neighbors:face_with_head_bandage:
I rented a bobcat backhoe, dug a big azz hole in the the back yard, dropped the whole thing in there and covered it up. Wish I could have buried the garage too. The house stunk for 6 months. Mrs. Cracker was not amused:face_with_head_bandage:

Not sure where I got it, but I had same problem. I got a some charcoal air freshener/purifier from lowes.
Actually to start I got 3. Never had a problem since, but I only use one now.
Took couple days at the start
I had a stink coming from our master bathroom, and it wasn’t because the wife dropped a deuce. After searching for the culprit for a few days I was able to pin point where the smell was coming from, the tub/jacuzzi. I opened the side panels up on it and found that animals were able to crawl directly from under the house crawl space straight up into the bottom part of the jacuzzi. It contained a couple of piles of decomposing rats, frogs, and some snake skins. We called critter control and they told me to use Bac-A-Zap, it eliminates organic odors.I cleaned out area very good, sealed the space where they were getting through and used the product that I got from possum’s in Mt. Pleasant, it worked. Great stuff for decomposing animals. The fridge air for my particular refrigerator is pumped through the freezer like the other gentleman said. If you dont eliminate the source, you wont stop the stink it will just come back after cleaning from the air pumped from the freezer. Defrost it, clean it with bleach very well and double and triple bag future bait-it’s the source. Apply the commercial grade Bac-A-Zap a few times. I also was told to put charcoal under the tub in a pan or something and it helps to filter out the funk.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I definitely will employ some of those techniques.
By the way, if you happen to get fish/bait stink on cloth upholstery or carpet in your car, I found a product called Simple Solution Advanced Odor/Stain remover. It’s an enzyme product that actually works on the molecules of whatever is causing the odor. I used it to get some bait stink out of the carpet in the back of my SUV.
I believe I got it at Walmart.
If your old refrigerator/freezer is more than 10 years old, I would suggest replacing it. You would be surprised how much is is costing you in electricity. The newer models are more efficient and will save you a lot of money imo…
Try the Zeolite odor elimination rocks. Home Depot carries them and I think Lowes.I use the bags for everywhere around the house, including freezer/fridge,they work fantastic. They also draw moisture out of the air. They’re also natural,no chemicals.
Empty the fridge and freezer, unplug and pull outside. Remove all the panels in the freezer part and spray liberally with bleach/water mixed about 50/50, rinse with hose and repeat a few times. Let it dry out real good, them replace panels and put back in use. Place baking soda or charcoal filters inside and you should be good. Like someone mentioned above, your fridge cools by moving some air from the freezer down to the fridge until temp below is reached. Smell is probably up top or between.

Did the same thing about ten years ago when a chest freezer went out with fifty plus bags of shrimp that turned black…
I had easy access to a back hoe and 8 acres so I was a tad luckier than the Capt…
Hope some of my in-laws who still owe me money read this post if you know what I mean.
