To those that are saying the Mahi bite has cooled off, not so! Great temperature break and weedline at the deli at about 300 ft. Trolled it for the day putting 10 Mahi in the box including a new boat record, a 38 lb bull Mahi that was literally bigger than the 33 ft Grady’s fish box. Had several double knockdowns and the big guy ate two ballyhoo, starting off double hooked and finishing up with a single hook deep in the gut. Our last trip we also had one Mahi that was gut hooked with two hooks … hungry fish! Ballyhoo with Blue and white, green and yellow, and purple black skirts all hooked up. Threw several peanuts back but most were keepers. On ride home was treated to a 4ft or so Wahoo shooting vertically out of the water putting about 2 feet of air between its tail and the water. Put some lines in and made a few circles but no luck. Great day with a great crew. My 10 year old even helped with the filleting, first time filleting a Mahi.
Agree, thats the best weed line I have seen this spring. Guessing there are people out there that know this … what are the optimal conditions for creating the best weed lines? My theory is a few days of light south winds will push all the weeds up to the edge of a current rip/temperature break. Conversely other wind directions will break up the weed lines. we found a heavy weed line on our last trip before this one but weeds were scattered for a 100+ yards on either side so was hard to troll it. This weed line was stellar, hard edge on the warm water side, pretty easy to troll right on it, and clear current rip and temperature break as well. The cold side had a scattered edge
Now that hes learned to fillet try teaching him to help pay for fuel!
Great trip keep it up and take care of the small ones, They don’t stay like that long!!!
Nice job. The weather has sucked so bad this year, it’s hard to know what is going on. I’m grouper fishing from here out until late September. I will put out liveies on a flat line, but after getting beaten up by waves, and eaten up by Cudas I’m done trolling for awhile.
