Demetre Park On James Island

If you have not had a chance to visit this park or fish here located off Ft. Johnson Rd., you are missing out. Beautiful views of Charleston Harbor and its surrounding landmarks. Might be the prettiest place in all of Charleston. Fished here this weekend and caught a slot red, and two nice trout. Three or four others fishing nearby had their coolers full. They swear its the best place to fish on Charleston Harbor, add in the great views and you cant beat it.

There isn’t a boat ramp at this park. There are two small beach areas where you could launch a kayak. The fishing dock is currently closed for repairs.

Next door is the James Island Yacht Club, which is private. The fishing pier looks like it will be back open by the end of March. There is also another fishing dock on the lake there. We fished from one of the beaches Saturday, people laying out and all. This place is great!

Apparently a local family (Demetre) donated all that land to Charleston in order for the community to enjoy. What a gift that was. Kudos to the family.

Ha, there’s a lot more to it than that, I can assure you.

Out of curiosity, what were other anglers catching by the cooler-full?

Well there is a big stone monument at the center of the park dedicated to the family and thanking them for their donation of the land. I think having it named after them speaks for itself. Two guys fishing at the beach had a mixture of whiting, spots, and some trout. Another guy said he released two reds and caught some over 14" trout as well. Lots of rays also.

Nice area. Here is a little history on the area.

Wow, that history is interesting. Mr. Demetre is a true patriot for his contributions to the community. Me and my familes new favorite spot.

On my list to fish here, have visited the park many times. Beautiful Views.

I’ll be back at the park Saturday after noon if anyone wants to join. Texted one of the guys I met there and he’s been catching his limit all week. I’m ready to go.

Limit of what?

Fish silly.

Anyone try fishing the pond? We tried crabbing it for just for grins and caught a large softshell turtle.

The fill dirt in the wiki explains alot about the high banks of the park. Way to go Mr Demetre for ensuring the park met the original vision. It’s a much better place for it.

I will be out there on Friday if the weather holds off. What area have y’all been fishing, the beach or the rocks?

I’ve never tried the pond but have seen people fishing there. They say it runs right through to the river, so should have plenty of fish going in and out. Last week I was fishing in front of the rocks at low tide and moved over to the beach later. Guys fishing the beach seem to have the most luck. The pier should be back open any day now.

Had another good day out there today, 3 keeper trout and one over slot red, also a couple rays and whiting. And the beautiful views as always.

Will be back next weekend again. Hopefully the pier is open by then.
