I have a garmin system (i think it’s a 541s). In the last few days, when I am running at crusing speed, the depthfinder doesn’t work - chart plotter and water temp are fine. If I am at a lower speed the depthfinder does work. Thoughts ?
I have a 441s that does the same thing. Depth finder works up to around 16 - 18 mph then the last depth recorded just flashes. Once I slow down, sometimes it resumes sounding, sometimes I have to turn the unit off and then back on. Maybe someone here will have some good info.
I had a Garmin on my boat and it did same thing. I assumed it couldn’t keep up when at speed. The transducer wasn’t receiving the signal back, I dont know that is the reason but its my best guess. I wonder if there is a transducer that could keep up when at speed?
Transducers are like real estate… location, location, location. It needs mounted in the right place and depth. I have a Garmin as well and it will read depth at 55mph. When you have aerated water, it will make them mad. I have heard of spraying them with Pam to help it from gathering air bubbles. My skiff before my boat I have now, I moved the ducer 3 times til I found the sweet spot.

I have a 541S also and just installed an Airmar thru-hull transducer. I think that will cure the same problem ![]()
Thanks MattR. I like the air bubble idea, I know from my line of work that ultrasound signals and air don’t go well together. It had been working fine for the last year and I just started having problems with it after having the boat on the rack and pressure washing some growth off the hull. I was careful around the transducer, but I guess I could have done something to it.
Thanks Reelescape. I may have to look into a new transducer if I cannot figure this out.
If you end up playing with the location, mounting a 3/4" strip of starboard to the transom to screw the ducer into will keep you from having to clean off sealant and re-seal the new holes each time. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be hung by my finger nails than spend an hour rubbing off old sealant.
I have a brand new Garmin Echo 300 and was getting the flashing depth finder at speeds over 20 MPH, When I got home and checked, I realized the transducer was not tight and was bouncing on the water.
We’re going back out on Friday and I hope that the problem is solved. My old Fishfinder 160 never did this.
