Depthfinders?

I made the move from boat to kayak about 3 years ago, and still frequently feel blind without a depthfinder. I’ve thought several times about installing one, but almost all of my fishing is now in shallow water so I’m not sure of the benefits. I’d appreciate some ■■■■■■■■ from anybody that’s using one. Do you think it’s worthwhile? How is it helping you catch fish? At what depth do you think it starts to become useful? Are you marking fish or just looking for holes? Thanks for your thoughts.

I just put a Hummminbird wide 128 depthfinder on my yak a couple of weeks ago. First time out I was just looking for holes, steep banks, hidden structure. Last weekend though I was paddling up the ICW and marked a nice school of suspended fish about 8 feet deep in 15 feet of water.
I picked it up for $40, so I don’t feel at all guilty.

So much water, So little time

I have a pirana 1 by humminbird on my Tarpon 160 and I use it the same as Too Busy… I have been using it to sound out the creeks and find holes and structure… I see fish marking all the time but All my lures and baits are broken… I told my wife that and that I had to buy all new stuff and she called me a tard… Nornally once I find what I am looking for I just turn it off and fish… it’s been handy but I could live without it…

He took the jugbelly clouser like an anemic sea trout on crack…

Thanks for the ■■■■■■■■. Still not sure if I need a new toy or not. Might let the fish decide… Thanks again.

Get an inexpensive black and white sounder (e.g. Eagle Cuda) and use to sound holes, sloughs, too small to show up on charts. Not much of an investment to find dropoffs and holes where fish stay. They run all day on rechargable 8 x 1.5V battery packs.
