Destin, FL fishing

Hey Folks, I’m headed to Destin, FL with some family for Memorial day weekend. Staying at the Fort Benning rec area and looking to put together a fishing trip for two of the days and need some advice on what type and/or species to target this time of year. I’ve only fished this area in August at the oil rigs and would love to do that again for tuna but I think that type of charter is probably out of our budget for this trip. A great trip to us would be high numbers, maybe some decent bottom dropping or kings, but really just good numbers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Search for public nearshore florida reefs. Plenty of good action within 3 miles of the coast. The bay is good for trout and reds. Fish the shallow grass flats early in the morning. Been going to Destin for 25 years. Inshore charters are not expensive either. Good luck.

Thanks OR, as we get closer and settle on something I will probably PM you for some more suggestions on bait and specific reefs. Will be doing a lot of homework, on everything in between.

Do you know anything about the bull red fishery during the May/June time of year? I’ve heard that its decent in the bay around the bridge, but have no knowledge of the seasonality.

Thanks again

I like to check out www.pensacolafishingforum.com to get an idea of what all is happening down there. You might be down there when snapper is open which would make a charter worth it. There are alot around and a 4 hour trip is plenty of time to limit out with all the near shore structure there. The last few years we have been renting kayaks and fishing from the beach for kings that time of year.

The big bull reds are usually easier to get in October. You can still catch reds around the Mid Bay Bridge in May/June though. As Steverino said, PFF is a really good resource too.
