Deveaux Bank

Hey was wondering if anyone had any fishing information about this area a friend of mine just got a boat and we went to this little island and swam. It looks like it could possibly be a nice spot to fish as well, there is a flat shallow area, sandbars and some deep water (70ft) surrounding this little island.

The surf fishing on the offshore side of Deveaux can be excellent. Big Redfish out there. It’s pretty hard to fish as you have to park your boat in the calm water on the side and then hike all your gear around to the front. If you decide to do it, be careful and bring two anchors. The water can get rough quick in what seemed to be a sheltered area when the tide was low…

Check a map and the times but I dont think you can access the front of the island until later in the year. There is only a small portion of beach on the north side open right now.

Well as an update we fished there twice this week and caught lots of whiting, a few blue fish and a pompano, and a huge bonnet head. But once on each trip something huge peeled of line really fast. The first day it knocked a bolt loose on the rod holder stripped almost a spool of line and got off, the second time the drag was so tight the bonnet head could barely pull it and what ever had it was taking line like it was in free spool but got off and the wire leader came back curly from so much stress. There was also a dolphin carcass that was eaten on the beach and something huge swirled by me in the water, so will be going back try to catch a monster fish.

There are some big sharks out there. As the water cools in September and October, the breakers to the right of the channel are good for big reds.

Big sharks. I fish there all the time. You can hook up on tarpon whiting reds Spanish weakfish and bluefish.

80% sharks 10% whiting and 10% everything else on the ocean side.

The channel side has big reds near the second can in the fall near high tide.

I don’t touch land there anymore because one day they might start writing those $400 per person fines they keep talking about.

Bring a big anchor and some sea sick meds. Someone is going to yak… guaranteed.

Yeah I figured Tarpon are in that area, you ever fish the channel by Island and the sandbar on Inlet side. I was thinking of trying in that area, I haven’t made it to the ocean side yet.

The ocean side can be tricky. It actually gets shallower the further out from the beach so if you’re anchored fishing the surf, you can get waves breaking behind you as well. It’s also tempting to try to get back to the channel from the ocean side by sneaking between the east tip of the island and the first green can marking the line of breakers to the south. That gap can be close to exposed at a low low. To my eye, the Noaa chart doesn’t seem to line up or reflect the real world -the whole front shows as a “Green” area that I’ve never seen submerged at the lowest low. I guess the whole area just shifts alot. Scroll through the at the historical images on Google Earth to see different tides. I love it out there but treat it with respect.
