When I head to the Capers reef, I go up to Price Inlet and out to the ocean. Is there a channel through Dewees Inlet to the ocean? That would be a much shorter route to Capers than going all the way up to Price Inlet and out. Thanks.
Let me clarify that. I have looked at Google earth and read previous posts. If you look at Google Earth, it looks like there are breakers surrounding the whole inlet - even to the south.
The inlet shifts from time to time but Straight out has been working for me. I keep my boat at the IOP marina and use the inlet a good bit. Also depending on your boat size you can run north along the beach at dewees and then cut out in to the ocean.

It’s just a 19 ft CC. Nothing serious, but I still don’t want to run aground!
Typically, the small inlets around Charleston will have breakers across them straight out but a cut will be right to the east or NE from just behind the breakers. You will have to look for it carefully because they shift as Fritz says. I would recommend sticking to Price’s unless you have an incoming tide and lower wind. I know it seems counter intuitive, but you may also be better off poking around checking the depths out by the breakers on a low tide. The lower water depth protects more of the inlet from rollers and breakers that would otherwise be covering it. You can get out of trouble easier when you’re not in that kind of white water. That’s also the time to find a pass near the beach like Fritz said too. You might get stuck easier at lower tide, but you can also get out of trouble easier. I wouldn’t recommend attempting anything at lower tide levels except that you have a small enough boat to do it and get out of trouble if you have to.

I have a friend in a 35’ Contender that fishes out of IOP marina and goes out through Dewees. He takes a hand-held GPS out on a calm day during low tide in his bay boat late each Winter…checks the depths and marks a route. He’s never run aground after doing this.
I’ve run out in a 28" Carolina Classic using his numbers and never ran in less than 3’ under the boat.

Here’s my trail from a few days ago. My boat doesn’t draw much water and worse case was heading out at mid-tide, but should help as a reference point.
