DHEC advisories

I was clicking through the SCDNR website and came across these advisories throughout the state. This sounds pretty serious to me but I don’t hear anyone talking about it. I love fishing and seafood is my favorite eats but it’s suppose to be GOOD for you. Anyone bothered by this, any thoughts, solutions…?

your sig line says it all

for those of us who subsist on seafood fairly heavily, i think it’s worth taking into consideration.

mercury would be the biggest issue, and it is most relevant for children and pregnant women (not good for developing brains)

my approach: try to eat seafood that lives short lives (flounder, trout, shrimp, oysters, mahi, etc)

barbawang nailed it. The higher up the food chain and the bigger the fish, the higher the mercury content per item (usually).

Another reason to love shrimp and oysters.

It’s probably all BS. If they used the same “scientists” as the one’s doing the snapper/grouper stuff there is large room for error. So, it’s either twice as bad as they say, or it’s just more eco-terrorist propaganda. With my best available reasoning super powers I’m gonna lean towards the second choice.

Freshwater is for drinking.

Spend 5 minutes reading different reports on the subject and you will realize your “best available reasoning super powers” are 100% wrong, sorry to say, but it’s for real and has been a issue for a long time, espicially in SC’s rivers which are among the most polluted in the nation.

Well common sense would suggest that most fish caught in "SC’s rivers’ are not worth the effort to eat. I wonder why you never see any Largemouth Bass on the menu at Gilligans up there in Moncks Corner? Because it tastes like fishmeal smells.

The best way to prepare these fish is to leave the fish whole and then walk over to the dumpster and quickly lift the lid and toss’em in. BAM!!!

Edit to add: If tilefish are on the “DO NOT EAT” list, why are people still fishing for them so much that the SAFMC is reducing bag limits and reducing the TAC? Someones eating them and apparently alot of them.

Freshwater is for drinking.

does anyone know someone that has had mercury poisoining? i think not!

I did some work for a guy who had mercury pois. (he had lived in japan for many years and he claimed he got it from the farm raised fish there) anyhow its a pretty s&$#$# thing to have

Hell, I used to play with mercury when I was a kid. No ill effects…well, except for the facial tics, and occasionally posting on the off-topic forum.

I was talking to a DNR researcher recently about another subect, but the discussion came around to mercury in bass. His comment was that they have indications that the more acidic the water the more the bass pick up the mercury. That was interesting to me since the lake I live on is basic and would mean our bass would not be as contaminated.

That would also mean that the rivers in South Carolina are not necissarily more poluted" - compared to most norther rivers, but the black water (tannic acid from decaying leaves) is caussing the fish to me more contaminated.

If anyone is concerned the test is a sample of hair from your head.

That’s called “wanton waste” by the DNR

I think a better suggestion might just be to catch them and release them alive if one isn’t going to eat them. Just sayin

I’m not sure if your comments indicate that you’re stupid, clueless, ignorant, or just a slob.

You don’t see Largemouth Bass “on the menu at Gilligans” because Largemouth Bass are a gamefish. Same reason why you don’t see Bream, Striper, or Crappie on the menu at Gilligans. Maybe half of your problem is that you see Gilligans as a stellar place to eat fish or seafood…that gives us a clue as to your sense of taste.

As for throwing fish in the dumpster…why the waste? Because you’re a slob, or because you’re stupid?

I used to throw them in the garden but the dang mercury and PCB’s was killing my peppers. Large Mouth Bass are an invasive species of fish, kind of like the grass carp. So we always just destroy them.

Area companies lost due to the impending doom that is the SAFMC’s radical fisheries management practice. 4

And from what part of the north are you from! Bass, Bream, and Crappie, are some of the best eating fish on the planet! Maybe it is the lack of know how on the cooks part!
