Garmin 498map go out on the blink? Depth finder works, but it will not acquire satellites? Anybody ever sent a unit back to Garmin?

You could try and update it yourself without sending it in to see if its a software issue. All you need is a SD card and follow the directions on garmins site. I did it to my unit and it fixed some quirks that it had. My GPS never crapped out though.

You might just need to “re-initialize” it. Check your set up. A GPS needs some initial coordinates that are close to where you turn it on. It uses those coordinates when it’s locking on to satellites when you power up. Some times the “set up” gets corrupted in a GPS. Carefully go through your set up and take care not to accidentally clear all your landmarks. This very often “fixes” a cranky GPS.

The first thing to do is update the software. That is a known Garmin bug and they have a fix for it. You can download it here
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1410. That will probably fix it, I’ve seen a few others do the same thing.

Thanks for replies!

I called Garmin. Within 3 min. I was speaking to young man from America! NO JOKE!

He instructed me to hook up the device, and basically do a warm boot.

  1. PUSH and HOLD the PAGE button in
  2. PUSH and HOLD the POWER buttn in along with the above PAGE button.
  3. When the “I AGREE” bar lights up, release above buttons, and hit enter.

WORKED LIKE A CHARM!

My software is up to date as we looked at the SYS button, so that was not the issue. He said “sometimes this things just get overloaded with all the info they are carrying and shut down”

I had the same problem. Forcing it to find sats. will work for a little bit. mine about 6 months. Garmin can’t do anything to fix the 498’s cause they quit making parts for it. Updates will not help don’t waste your money like I did.
