lost another nice red the otherday , headed out wit cdray1 got to a dock rite around slack to catch trout on the incomin. 20 minutes lata boom big red and he worked my ass on the 8wt , fed the line got to the drag and worked me tryed thumbin em but there was no horsin him wit the 8lb tippet so he headed strait to humble abode wit ease and POP!!! this time no anger just laughed like what the ****. we watched this fish eat a black and purple deucer and i slammed it on his ass like jose wejebe haha . we ended up wit about a dozen keeper trout all on deucer and decivers.
The 8 wt has always been my favorite saltwater red rod but sometimes it just can’t stop them from hitting the oysters or running through pilings. I have yet to have one over power the 9wt though. Got to love the (sea)ducer and deceivers too.

Arguably, you may not get as many bites but try putting on some bigger tippet. One day all I had in the boat was my cobia rod with about a 3-4 foot section of 50 lb. on it. We proceeded to catch a bunch of fish both around docks and also wading the flats. I think that with the water clarity being what it is the fish just don’t care.
fly size should help you determine tippet size. i use 20lb flouro for flies larger than #4, in late winter when smaller flies are easier to get in front of fish w/o spookin 'em, i go down to 10 or 12lb…
