Differense between a Red and a Spot

Seeing pictures of what I thought was Spot, but they are calling them Reds? What is the difference?

Around here spots are little fish that people ■■■■■ to piers to catch in September. A spot tail, channel bass, redfish, red drum, puppy drum are all the same.

A spot has a spot up front (right behind the gills) and a red has a spot at it’s tail (and sometimes a few extra spots along it’s body).

Spots tend to be smallish fish like the croakers we catch around here. Redfish have spots on or near the tail…spots usually have only one spot on each side that is near the gills. The larger spots are really good to eat.

In that case I guess it was a 6 pound red I caught and not a spot. Reds any good eatin’?

Transplanted Texan trying to learn the Carolina way. Can you run trot lines for flounder?

Nah, They are terrible, better throw them all back:wink:

A spot is nothing to worry about, a red is something to go to the Dr about…

spots are the filet mignon of the sea, reds are bony and nasty best to release

I hope you realize that they are pulling your leg. Reds are very tasty. I prefer Black Drum, trout and flounder for the grease as the reds are highly prized around here (as they should be). Just remember, never mess with a fish a state thinks enough of to put on a license plate. The recent events of this past winter have put a hurtin on the trout. I would highly recommend releasing all trout. What you do, ultimately, up to you. Trout are legal to keep, if they are appropriate size. Redfish went through several years where they were few and far between and the anglers in this area are very protective of the fishery. It’s ours to enjoy and we want to protect it and have it around so we can enjoy. And the enviro-nazi think "they: protect species. They are nothing compared to sportsmen that pursue the game. Good luck and enjoy the amazing fishery that is Charleston.

Redfish 19" to 21" are the best to eat. We generally throw everything else back. In the old days before the limit, we kept several fish over 32-40" and found them to be mostly full of worms. The meat gets tough in the larger ones, and after all, they are the breeders that we benefit most from. The smaller ones are much more tasty anyway.

The Trout fishing this year has been all catch and release for us, mainly because they have all been undersize. There weren’t many around this winter and should probably all be released. They taste better than redfish so it is tough, but will be worth it next year if a lot of folks do the same.

By Spot, I assume you mean Spottail Bass. It’s all about who’s saying it, redfish is the new cool way thing to call em

I grew up in Alabama. My grandparents live in Savannah. My Moms sister and here family live in New Orleans. As a kid we fished a lot in the Gulf and a lot around Savannah. In The Gulf the beautiful, copper red fish with spots on them are redfish/ red-drum/ reds. The same fish caught in Savannah, and my home Charleston, are called spot-tail bass. No real difference that I can tell.

I was born in Biloxi, grew up in Ocean Springs, and fished a lot in Louisianna. Folks down there would not even know what a ‘Spottail Bass’ is, and never called them ‘Red Drum’. In the Gulf the big ones are called ‘Bull Reds’, the medium ones are called ‘Redfish’, and the little ones are called ‘Rat Reds’.

You should never insult the Fish Gods by calling a ‘Redfish’ a ‘Spot’.

Yo Pioneer no offence intended. On the gulf and the east coast a fish earns a nickname based on its size, but a red is a red, and a spot is a spot, and a red is a spot, and a spot is… oh sh&*%t now I’m dizzy. Just saying there all the same fish with different merit badges regardless of one spot, two spot, ten spot, no spot…Sh$#&^t I did it again.

i always thought a puppy drum was a baby black drum. am i wrong? vertical black stripes like when you google puppy drum and its the 2nd pic on the right?

Puppy drum to me have always been undersized red drum/redfish/spottail bass/channel bass. Not black drum. Just my 2 cents.

Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…

Posting on a message board all the time doesn’t make you smart. Frankly, it just means you probably need to get a life.

Puppy drum are to redfish what peanuts are to dolphin.
