Differential Oil Question

I have a 2006 2WD Toyota Tundra. I need to change the rear differential oil. I need 75W - 90 oil and found Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip gear oil at a good price. I hate to say it but, I do not know whether my truck has a LSD or not. How can I tell and, if it does not, will using gear oil for a LSD rear end be harmful?

Thanks

Won’t hurt a bit if you don’t have limited slip. The additive is a friction modifier for LS unit that use a clutch disk system to keep them from chattering/binding.

Jack you truck up and put it in nuetral and turn your rear wheels. If they turn in opposite directions your boot leg. no ls.

or just jack up one side and being very careful see if it will pull off.

Edit: Or power brake it and see if both tires spin. :sunglasses: It is Friday!

To tell if you have a limited slip jack up the rear end and spin one of the rear wheels, if the other wheel turns in the opposite direction then you don’t have a LSD. LSD rated gear oil is safe to use in a non LSD application.

I like the power brake idea. Much more fun.

A real truck only needs power, no brake to check for a posi.

The clutchless LSD’s in a lot of the newer trucks do not turn the same direction when jacked up but do provide full power to both wheels in the same direction. The Challenger is that way and my Ram. Helical cut spider gears and magic inside makes them work.

A Toyota may have a gear LSD (quaife style)but even then friction modifier is not needed and if added will not hurt anything. Auto parts places usually have it in ~10oz. bottles.

This is controlled power braking.

Thanks for all the info guys. I realized I still have the original window sticker and there is no mention of LSD so I am assuming I do not have one. No burn outs for me, tires are too dang expensive nowadays. That certainly didn’t figure in when my Dad was buying my tires.

Will that 22R motor even spin the tires:question:[:0]

Just got out the shower and headed to Screven Motor Speedway right after we stop at Sniders and pick up a peck of boiled peanuts:stuck_out_tongue:. Taking a “slightly” modified s-10, the Mud truck and my Lightning. I May be able to post you a picture of at least one decent burn out if the weather holds up. :sunglasses:

Don’t know if any of Y’all have been there but they have a dirt circle track, 1/8 mile track and now a mud drag. And one of the best pork chop sandwiches around!

My Zero Turn Mower does a good burnout in the dirt and does some awesome donuts when I throttle up and push/pull the levers in opposite directions… Sorry, still too dizzy to take pics…
