Dinner Cruise??

Has anybody been on the Spiritline dinner cruise? I was thinking of taking my wife there for our two year anniversary and wanted to do something a little more than just dinner. How was the food and atmosphere? Is it worth the $150? Thanks for the input.

Been on there a couple times, but only for business. The food was mediocre, but the real draw is the atmosphere and the scenery. It’s a really neat experience, and the $150 might not be worth it for the food but might be for the ambiance.

“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”

It’s nice, we’ve done it several times, but that was a number of years ago. I remember we paid $80 for it. I can’t fathom paying $150 for it unless you were getting private tables. In years past they’d partner you up with another couple, which was sorta cool really, we always got great folks we sat with. Both times we sat with couples that were old enough to be our grandparents, and I’ve always appreciated the company of my elders anyhow.

Food won’t be anything you’ll be writing a newspaper article about.

I’ve been a couple of times for business also. It was a pretty good experience. I never liked the fact that I didn’t have the option to leave and go somewhere else if I wanted to. I am not knocking it, but for that kind of money you could do something pretty nice downtown, or get a room in the Inn at Middleton Place. That’s pretty nice.

We have gone a few times, but were all paid for by someone else. It was nice, but like others said, food was nothing to write home about. I don’t think I would shell out $150 for it, but I’m cheap like that. I would rather take my boat to Reds and save some money.

A bad day fishing is much better than a good day at work.

If I had a boat that is exactly what I would do. I think I might give the dinner cruise a shot. We did something like that once before in Jax and she seemed to enjoy it. Thanks for the info.

My wife and I have been on the Spirit Line dinner cruise several times. I think it is a really fun time. All of the comments are on track as far as the food is concerned. You start out with a little bowl of she-crab soup. Then you get a salad followed by your main entr?e. Their is a choice of steak, pork or salmon and I think shrimp and grits for the main entr?e.
In between servings the waiter tells you how long you have and you can pop out on deck and enjoy the views. The main meal with tea or soda is included in the price. Beer and mixed drinks are added on the tab.
There is usually a musician playing music. Maybe a little dancing depending on how the crowd feels. The ladies get to dress up nice. You get your picture taken when you board the boat. At the end of the cruise they show you your pics and you decide if you want to buy the photo. I think it is like $10.00. All in all a fun night. I recommend doing it for sure.

Thanks for the info Dorado. Do you know if the drinks are pretty fair priced?

The drinks are priced comparable to a bar or normal restaurant. My wife drinks martinis and I drink Heinekens. I can’t remember the exact price but I think 4 dollars per premium beer and 4-5 dollars for my wife’s martinis.

I have to agree with this, fully.

If you have access to a boat, or own your own, then you can get a ride around the harbor anytime lol. If you’re a tourist, and you won’t be back in Charleston for a long while, and you want a romantic time, then it’s a pretty good deal. For folks like us who live here, it’s an option, but probably not the best option in terms of value for the money.

Yea I looked into Middleton Place but they were booked up the night we are planning on going out. Plus that’s more expensive than the dinner cruise. We just had our first baby so we are on a somewhat strict budget. It just seems like it has gotten to be so expensive to eat in Charleston anymore.

I have a smoker, and learned how to use it. Eating out has become a bit of an arcane thing now lol. Used to be, I’d eat out and get grilled or smoked items on the menu since that was the stuff I was least capable of doing… I never order seafood since I can cook seafood better than any restaurant (well, at least better than any restaurant that I can actually afford to eat at). Now, I have nearly no reason to go out lol.

If you’re looking for a reasonably decent meal in the Mt. P area, the Mustard Seed is pretty good. $10-20 per entree, most of them being on the lower half of that range. Has been one of our favorites for 15 years now.

Yea I have been to the Mustard Seed a few times but the one on James Island. I’ve even been to the old Mustard Seed with the pig on the sign. I think my favorite restaurant in Charleston has to be the Tomato Shed on Johns Island. Its very cheap and you cant beat the food or the at home atmosphere. I actually have two grills. I can grill everything from a pork butt to fish. I really want to learn how to smoke things so a smoker will be my next outside toy purchase.

Smoking stuff is relatively easy as long as you have a good thermometer, and you use lots of restraint when putting on the wood chips. It’s easier to oversmoke (and thus, ruin) something than it is to under-smoke it.

Also, proper seasoning rub is critical, esp. oil and dry seasoning mixes (not sure if you call that a dry rub with oil, or an oil-based wet rub).

And, sea salt.
