I keep my boat in HHI at the Boat House. I actually live in Rock Hill. I do plan on coming down for several days next week and the week after (took two weeks off work), I need to get some fishing in, too much nasty weather this winter on my days off. We’ll have to try to meet up and I can give the whole story, not just the Cliff Notes.
I guess that is our Mother’s Day tribute right there. I do understand and relate to those statements (I think I got old). I just refuse delivery on the old age.
That is some GOOD STUFF there Larry!
I gotta print that out!

Internet forums make for incomplete communication, because we can’t use facial expression, hand gestures, body language, tone of voice and other nuances that relay thoughts as intended. Heck, sometimes I can’t do it in person either:smiley:
Take it slow, take it safe, know your boat, plot your course. Have some fun doing it. Nobody needs to get hurt out there and it happens too often.

Larry I was just stating what mine burns at “cruise”… I don’t have any intentions of taking my bay boat that far offshore. But if I did I would definitely be taking alot more into consideration then what I do putting around in cheechesee or the broad you can count on that! How can you calculate what it will burn in rough seas like that of you don’t normally run in rough conditions? The farthest I will venture out is the Ross and that’s plenty far enough for me! I was fishing at the R8 navy tower in a 35’ Triton… We were jigging up grouper and red snapper when we could get past the AJs and a 20 ft sea hunt bay boat out of savannah came pulling up! The ocean was like a pond that day but all I could think about was man those guys sure are a long way from home if the weather goes south on the ride back. Sometimes I ask myself if the reward is ever worth the risk heading out to the deep blue but it sure is beautiful out there!

Y’all want to know what is really funny about that Mother’s Day post to me? I was born and raised in the deep South and have heard every one of those lines from my mom, or my dad, or both, more than once. But that was sent from a boat builder friend born and raised in South Africa:smiley: Small world.

Well your post with all the equip you have made me look like an ass, but I hope everyone who knows me knows I just had to ask, I went back and checked my runs log for the last 12 yrs in Sea Tow and I counted 23 times I assisted a boater outside with no GPS.
Word of advice , have the EPIRB on your pfd all the time offshore, any weather, if its too big you MUST be able to put your hand on it like it your last resort, then get the rest of whatever needs to done done safely.
Sea Tow Atlantic City just lost a Captain who unfortunately drowned and what ever happened (I have no idea) the boat went down fast, but he got EPIRB signal off.

Mike,
You are never an ass when you ask someone about safety. Looking out for fellow boaters and fisherman can only save their lives. If one gets upset, hopefully they will look back and realize at least they are still alive to be upset. I am sure that nobody goes out on the water expecting to have trouble, however, as you pointed out, it does not take any time at all to have things go wrong - in a hurry.
In my line of work, we strive to challenge our teammates about safety each and every day. Our culture has changed significantly in the main point being, not to take chances. Think of the risk. Just because you got away with it one day, it does not reduce the risk. The amount of risk stays the same, you were just lucky that one time.
We should always ask, “What’s the worst that could happen?” Plan for it, or change the plan.
Read the mothersday post to my wife last night, she called my son and read it to him! Sounds as if my mother wrote it and she was raised in Alberta Canada almost 100 years ago!!
Its just that Navy/Firefighter/Paramedic/Sea Tow Capt mentality I have if I don’t enough info when someone asks for an answer and I don’t have all the facts, I got to make a decision, in this case I assumed he did not have a GPS, so…Gotta say or do something…all the other FF/medics can chime in anytime…this is what keeps us alive (or did for me) working NC/Union Heights…etc…so not defending me, but give all the info, and you’ll get better answers…
And for those of you that have asked, I no longer am running a boat for Anthony and AMy, 8 spine surgeries did me in and am only a lonely dispatcher sometimes, but now I get to fish!!!
