BUMP In THE NIGHT

i have had some of my best dives at night, just have a buddy and a good light. Lots of fish that you wont see during the day
Did it in the military and as a commercial gold miner. NEVER lose your buddy, and enjoy the peace.

Night dives are pretty cool. Do a first dive just before dark to get acclimated to the area. Clip a cylume stick to your tank so your buddy can keep up with you and the boat can see you on the surface.
You won’t to do a lot of distance swimming, just stay close to the boat. Your flashlight will do amazing things to the reef and you’ll see colors you’ve never thought were there!
The fish will start to bed down at dusk, look under ledges and in holes. I’ve heard there are some really big sharks under the 7 Mile Bridge - but you’ll prolly never see them…they might see you though. The current can be pretty strong at the bridge too.
On a full moon, you almost won’t need a flashlight because of the moon reflecting on the sandy bottom. Sometime during the dive, turn off your light and let your eyes adjust and clap your hands to see the florescent diatoms.
Sombrero or the Barge Wreck are good night dives, but Sombrero is a sanctuary and you may not be able to harvest fish there…check the rules.

Definitly not for everybody, but can be truly amazing. You’ld hardly believe that your diving on the same reef. Backup light is a great thing to have as well, had mine go out once on me and was pretty interesting to say the least, even with a buddy.

Night Dives are great, I have made more than 30 dives at night ranging from 60 ft to 110 ft. I worked for a dive shop in Ft. Lauderdale. Out of all the dives I saw 1 Hammerhead he was exiting a wreck that i was tying a bouy off too. None of the night dives have been for sticking fish.
If you catch it at the right time (Transitional period) you can see to Nocturnal fish coming out and the daytimers going to bed.
