Hey guys. I just wanted to see if anybody ever has some extra room to take me diving. I’ve never dove in Charleston, so I’d like to tag along sometime with someone who knows the area before going out with my buddies. I took up diving to get into spearfishing, so if you’re going to do that it would be awesome. I don’t mind pitching in some gas money or beer, or even helping clean up the boat. I’m usually available most weekends. So if you know you’re going and don’t mind and extra body on the boat give me a few days heads up.
Thanks guys!

Hey Breeze - you might want to make changes as follows:

Ha, I know what you mean. Just last month I was diving in Port Lucaya Grand Bahamas and a what looked to be a black tip swam up on me. Surprisingly it didn’t bother me (meaning mentally), but I would have thought I would have freaked out. It was real cool. I have a video of it.
Does anyone on here run a charter dive boat? I can’t afford to rent out the whole thing, but if you ever have room for another or more let me know.

Lot of current, lot of sharks, poor vis off and on- diving here is great but it might be smart to go diving with Lowcountry like someone recommended and make sure you have what it takes to dive here before “becoming a spearfisherman”- ive taken several friends on my boat who were certified in clear conditions in nice locations and they couldn’t really handle it here- it was scary as a captain being in charge of them and there diving was cut short for the day- I don’t know you, but just saying- make sure you good to go before spending more money and get in over your head- cheers
FishingBarrels is right. Diving here is not easy and certainly not for everyone. With that said it is rewarding and exceedingly fun. Do a few boat dives with Charleston Scuba or Lowcounty Scuba and get your bearings before you pick up a gun.
I look forward to seeing your reports.

Jordan and FnB are both 100% spot on! Get some bottom time here in Charleston, before trying to shoot things. Until you know what to expect off shore here, don’t try to task load too quickly. Every year or two, we loose a good experienced diver, and we have had a few close calls (with veteran divers) just this last summer. Sharks, bad viz, and nasty currents can screw up your day really quick. Throw in some harsh thermoclines, sketchy air and possible equipment failures, and its surprising how many of us still dive here.
Make sure your DAN insurance is paid up, and your gear is up to the task. Most of the dives we do are in the 95-130 foot range, with a few hard-core guys that push 200+ feet from time to time. You will need to know your limits on HP120s, running 30-32% EANx. The typical AL-80s don’t allow for the bottom time required, when hunting/ stringing fish.
You may already have all of the required gear, and 200+ deep dives in ice cold mud, but it’s still wise to scout out the area before task loading. Run with a charter a few times, just to figure out what to look for around here. Vic is a good guy, and he will show you the craft, without putting you at risk. He won’t even make you clean the boat or bring a skimpy huzzy as part of the deal.

If it doesn’t say “Eaten by a shark” on my tombstone, then I obviously didn’t go enough…
