DIY Camo Jon Boat Project

I’m new to this forum and I couldn’t find any threads on this here recently. I have a 16’ War Eagle 648MV that is in need of a new paint job. I am considering painting my own camo on the boat. I’ve done a little research on stincils, types of paint, etc…The boat is 17 years old and still has the original OD Green paint on it, but is showing some bare metal in certain spots. Everything I have researched says to paint the boat with a “self etching OD Green paint” which I understand will allow the other paint to adhere to the aluminum better. I’ve seen some use spray cans and others use pneumatic sprayers. Has anyone done a project like this? Advice and pointers are much appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes, PM coming.

by the time you purchase all material to do this, you’d come out cheaper to pay someone who does this for a living. You could pay to have that boat painted in “bottom land” or any other pattern you choose for about $350.00. I’d bet it would cost you close to that in supplies.

I painted this boat a few years ago,cut my own stencils.Prepping the boat is important so the pain will stick.I just used rattle cans in camo colors like in all the local stores.I dont even think i had $50 bucks in paint.

I camo painted an extended cab GMC 1500 for around $100 and I’ve had several people ask me if it was a wrap/decal. :sunglasses:

Thanks for all the advice guys…I’m thinking I’ll cut my own stencils out of yard sale signs and go with rattle cans. Thankfully painting something camo is a great way to hide imperfections. Plus it’ll give me and my son a project to do together. @redfish_matt that truck looks awesome bud! Great work!

My wife and I have baby #2 on the way in about 5 weeks so this will be a good Fall project. I’ll post progress pics soon.

I’ve painted a couple and used palmetto fronds for stencils. They are cheap. Also just used camo paint in rattle cans. Both Krylon and Rustoleum make good flat camo paint in several colors.

The best part about the rattle can job is if you don’t like one part or you scratch the well out it, you just spray something else over it and you’ll never know.

My biggest concern would be removing the motor in order to invert the boat. The motor has never been unbolted from the transom and I’m a little worried that it won’t go back on as good as it was from the dealership. I’m probably making a bigger deal out if it than it needs to be, but you just never know.

There are also a few ribs that could use a couple beads redone and maybe some angle iron for stability. Anyone know of a good place in Columbia?

Thanks,
Alex

You are overthinking the motor removal. It will go back on just fine.

tape and drape motor no need to remove. Why you want to paint the bottom?

If you need aluminum welding, get in touch with Happybob here on CF. He is in the Columbia area. Personally I would not worry about painting the bottom and taking the motor off is no big deal.

It just be me being anal retentive, but I suppose I don’t have to remove the motor…It’s going to get a coat as well. I’ll look in to Happybob. Thanks again guys.
